RICHMOND —
Several people were hospitalized Saturday and more were injured, falling 10 to 12 feet, after a backyard deck holding between 30 and 40 guests collapsed.
Three seriously injured people were taken directly from the scene to the University of Kentucky Medical Center, according to Carlos Coyle, assistant director for Madison County EMS.
“It could have been much worse than it was,” Coyle said. “It is my understanding that it was one story, or it could have been much worse.”
The front end of the deck collapsed at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, creating a “sliding board,” according to Joe Lillis, Richmond codes enforcement director.
“It was surprising that more people weren’t hurt,” Lillis said.
The home, located in the 1,000 block of Amberly Way, was built in 2004, and the deck’s weight capacity was designed for 40 pounds per square foot, he said.
The group fell about 10-12 feet, according to Lillis.
Aside from those who were transported to UK Med Center, several more were treated at the scene for injuries, according to Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock.
“The extent of the injuries was undetermined at the time of the report,” he said.
However, Coyle said those treated at the scene suffered “non-life-threatening injuries.”
