RICHMOND —
A sexual assault was reported last week at a dorm on Eastern Kentucky University’s campus, but the university is offering few details about the incident.
The forcible sex offense happened at 3:30 a.m. Saturday at Dupree Hall, according to the online EKU daily crime and fire log. It was reported to EKU police later that day at 7:28 p.m.
University spokesperson Marc Whitt said the incident is under investigation and referred an Open Records request for the incident report to EKU’s legal counsel, Judy Spain.
While files from ongoing investigations are not open to the public, initial reports generated from an arrest or crime incident are public documents, according to several rulings by the state attorney general.
The Richmond Register does not print the names of people who report being victims of sexual crimes.
The Register filed on Open Records request Tuesday with the university, which has three days to respond.
Last year, the EKU police reported six forcible sex offenses on the Richmond campus, according to the 2011 Crime in Kentucky report released by the Kentucky State Police. In 2010, 10 forcible sex offenses were reported, and three instances were reported to the EKU police in both 2009 and 2008, according to the university’s Clery Act Annual Security and Fire Safety Report.
