RICHMOND —
Area dance students will take the stage Thursday night in Richmond as “munchkins” in the Broadway production of “The Wizard of Oz.”
The musical will be performed at the EKU Center for the Arts, which announced Tuesday that dance students from Hazel’s Old School of Dance in Danville will perform the munchkin roles.
The company performing the musical asked for a group of local children to perform the roles of “munchkins” as part of its continuing arts education.
“This is the second time Hazel’s Old School of Dance has been asked to supply the munchkins for ‘The Wizard of Oz,’” said Stephanie Cooley, owner and instructor at Hazel’s Old School of Dance. “We are thrilled for this opportunity to come to us twice. I told my girls that it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing that has happened twice.”
The opportunity to perform will give the girls a first-hand look at what it is like to be part of a professional company, said Debra Hoskins, executive director of the EKU Center for the Arts.
“We are so glad to have this opportunity for these young dancers,” Hoskins said. “It is a tremendous learning experience and something they will not soon forget.”
The dancers have been practicing “tirelessly” over the past few weeks, Cooley said.
Tickets for the show range from $35 to $65 and are on sale now at www.EKUCenter.com or by calling the EKU Center Box Office at 622-SHOW (7469).
The box office is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
