RICHMOND —
The case against a Richmond woman accused of abusing a 6-year-old child was dismissed last week in Madison Circuit Court.
Staci Renee Waldroup was charged in April 2010, along with her husband Christopher David Waldroup, with first-degree criminal abuse of a child younger than 12, a Class C felony.
There was never any question that Staci Waldroup’s “husband was the one who committed the harm to the child,” said Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Jennifer Smith told Judge William G. Clouse.
The case had been referred to mediation, Smith said, but the process had not yet begun.
The charge against Staci Waldroup was dismissed without prejudice, which means it can be refiled later.
Smith said the woman had cooperated with family court and would like to be reunited with her children.
In a preliminary hearing in district court, Richmond Police Detective Eric Long said he was informed that a 6-year-old child had come to school with a mark on the right side of her face, and the child had said her father had struck her with a fly swatter.
Long visited the Waldroups’ home and spoke with the child on April 16, 2010, and the mark still was visible on her face.
During an interview with police, Christopher Waldroup said the child was misbehaving and he “went to ‘pop’ her on the butt with a fly swatter, and the child dropped and turned toward him and it (the fly swatter) made contact with her face,” Long testified.
Christopher Waldroup is free on a $10,000 bond.
A Class C felony is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
