RICHMOND —
The legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will be celebrated throughout the county Monday with events happening in Richmond and Berea.
Richmond will be celebrating with a 5 p.m. unity march beginning at First Baptist Church at Collins and Irvine streets, according to the Rev. Robert Blythe, president of the Richmond-Madison County branch of the NAACP.
The traditional march path is from First Baptist Church, west on Irvine Street to North Second Street, south on Second Street to Water Street, then east to Collins Street and back to the church.
At 6 p.m., participants in the Madison County Schools’ African-American Male Mentoring Program will lead a program in the church sponsored by the local NAACP.
Berea College events
Berea College will be hosting a “Moving Beyond the Dream to Brighten the Future” program, which will include several events beginning in the sanctuary of Union Church, 200 Prospect St. Gail Bowman, director of the Berea College Campus Christian Center, will present “Why We March” at 9:30 a.m. Her address will be followed at 10 a.m. by a march to First Christian Church at 206 Chestnut St.
A Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Program will begin at 11 a.m. at First Christian, followed by lunch at noon in the Berea College cafeteria. The lunch price is $4 per person.
A noon workshop titled “Culturally Inclusive Teaching,” featuring Roger Cleveland of the Eastern Kentucky University College of Education, will be conducted at the Carter G. Woodson Center for Interracial Education. Seating is limited and reservations are required. For reservations, call the center at 985-3785.
A presidential inauguration viewing will begin at 1 p.m. in Baird Lounge of Berea’s Alumni Building and is open to the public.
The day’s events in Berea will conclude with a convocation, “Never Turning Back: How Do We Know When We’ve Won,” at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Auditorium. Civil rights activist Jim Kates, author of “Letters from Mississippi: Reports from Civil Rights Volunteers & Poetry of the 1964 Freedom Summer,” will speak.
EKU events
The EKU Cultural Center will host a 7 p.m. candlelight vigil Tuesday in honor of King at the Powell Building Plaza.
“A few moments will be taken to remember the man and the dream,” said Jerry Wallace, EKU spokesperson. “We will also be remembering the lives lost in the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Newport, Conn., and sending our prayers out for the friends and families who loved them.”
Light refreshments and hot drinks will be served. The prayer service will be moved inside the Meditation Chapel in the event of inclement weather.
EKU’s third-annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award Banquet will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Keen Johnson Ballroom.
The EKU Cultural Center will host the event, which will be accompanied by music from the EKU Jazz Ensemble and followed by award presentations with music, words and songs that reflect the message of King and this year’s chosen theme: “Voices of a New Generation.”
