The Richmond and Bluegrass Rotary clubs are inviting the public to join them for a romantic evening Feb. 16, the Saturday after Valentine’s Day, to help provide dental care for local children.
Proceeds from the fourth annual Rotary Diamonds and Denim Ball will support the Miles of Smiles Program that will provide dental care for elementary-age children not covered by private insurance or Medicaid, said Joan Beck, the Richmond Rotary Club co-chair for the ball.
The ball will take place in the Armed Forces Reserve Center on US 421 next to the Blue Grass Army Depot entrance. The cost is $75 per person.
Music will be provided by the band Caught Red Handed. Catering will be by Jenny Stephens of Heritage House. The affair is called a diamonds and denim ball because black-tie and “denim-chic” attire is requested.
Rotary’s Miles of Smiles will work with the Madison County School District and the county health department to identify children who need dental care but whose families do not have public or private insurance and can’t afford the cost, said Skip Moore, the Bluegrass Rotary Club’s co-chair for the event.
Every year, the health department provides dental screenings to about 600 Madison County second-graders. Of those they identify, from 150 to 200 need dental intervention, Beck said.
“At present, there is no followup mechanism to provide care,” Beck said.
However, a number of local dentists have agreed to a reduced-fee schedule to treat children referred by the health department.
“The Miles of Smiles program is designed to help fund treatment at reduced fees so these children can smile without embarrassment and also smile because they are enjoying good oral health,” Moore said.
In addition to attending the ball and enjoying a fun, romantic evening Valentine’s weekend, interested individuals and businesses can help Miles of Smiles with ball sponsorships, the co-chairs said.
Sponsors, from the $250 to the $1,500 level and beyond, will receive recognition as well as tickets to the ball.
