BEREA —
BEREA — Tuesday from 3-6 p.m., the Berea Comprehensive Care Center will open its doors so citizens may check out their new location at 1315 Gabbardtown Road (formerly the MARC Center).
For years, the only community mental health center in Madison County was located in Richmond on Gibson Lane, serving more than 1000 patients, said Mykey Lewis, a children’s intensive treatment team leader with the Bluegrass Regional Mental Health-Mental Retardation Board.
However, the staff at the Richmond location has been regularly servicing children and adults in Berea too. They also care for patients in Clark, Estill and Powell counties, he said.
The Berea center will have three clinicians for children on Tuesdays and Thursdays and three clinicians for adult treatment on Mondays and Wednesdays.
“Some of the things we were hearing from patients was that they didn’t have time to make it to Richmond often, this is our way of coming to them,” Lewis said.
The staff offers family and couples counseling. They also visit patients in their homes and provide consultations at schools — part of their community outreach efforts.
“We recognize that people can’t change through a traditional doctor’s visit,” Lewis said.
The center offers sliding-scale fees and accepts all types of insurance, including medical cards.
Bluegrass Regional MHMR services 17 counties in central Kentucky. For details, call 1-800-928-8000.
