RICHMOND —
A local organization seeking to build a skateboard park for the city of Richmond is asking its members to attend Tuesday’s city comprehensive plan meeting.
Members of Skate Richmond KY are expected to request that the city formally add building a skateboard park to the comprehensive plan, according to attorney Wesley Browne, one of the group’s leaders.
Skate Richmond had sought to have a park constructed in Betty Miller Park, but neighbors of the park objected before an April meeting of the Richmond City Commission where Browne addressed the commission.
Browne said city officials had informed the group that if the skateboard park was included in the city’s comprehensive plan, it would increase the potential for grant funds to be awarded to the project.
Inclusion in the plan also would open additional fundraising opportunities for the group, Browne said, as it would indicate community support for the project.
“Once we’re in the comprehensive plan, it helps with our fundraising efforts,” Browne said.
The group has been formally incorporated with the state as a non-profit corporation, Browne said, and has received approval to operate as a 501(c)3 corporation for tax purposes.
Browne said the group is not soliciting direct contributions, but continues to sell T-shirts to fund operations.
A meeting was proposed to allow group members to meet with city commissioners to discuss alternative sites for a skateboard park, but no meeting has been conducted, Browne said.
“We’re not looking for the perfect site, but one that meets most of the criteria,” Browne said.
One possible site is a proposed park near the city’s wastewater treatment facility on Tates Creek Road, Browne said.
The addition of sidewalks in the area would make the park accessible for skaters, Browne said.
Accessibility has been an issue with proposed sites, as the group wanted the Betty Miller Park location so downtown skaters could use the facility.
Opponents of the Betty Miller Park site, including Betty Miller, proposed Lake Reba Park as an alternate site.
Browne said the group is preparing a voter’s guide for the November election, and will send questionnaires to candidates asking for their views on building a skateboard park.
Additional information about the group is available on Skate Richmond KY’s Facebook page.
