RICHMOND —
Traditionally, the newly elected circuit court clerk would have began her term on Jan. 1.
However, Darlene Snyder was sworn in Thursday by Madison Circuit Judge Jean C. Logue, replacing Linda Spurlock Cates, who retired Tuesday.
Shortly after the May primary, Cates spoke with the state retirement board, Snyder said, but didn’t expect to get an appointment so quickly.
Judge Logue made the decision to appoint Snyder to the position after Cates submitted her resignation about a month ago, she said.
Tuesday, the office employees bid farewell to Cates, who served as circuit court clerk for over 20 years. Several attorneys and circuit clerks from across the state attended her reception.
“I’m excited that she’s our boss now,” said Cindy Pennington, a district court deputy clerk of almost 10 years. “Darlene’s a very considerate person and will be very accommodating to our needs.”
Deputy circuit court clerk of 18 years, Jenny Spurlock, said she was lucky to have a boss “who is also a friend.”
Snyder won a three-candidate race for the Democratic nomination in May. Because no Republican or independent candidates were in the race, the office went to the Democratic nominee.
Kentucky courthouses, including circuit clerk offices, will be closed Monday as employees of the state’s judicial branch take a day of unpaid furlough, according to an announcement from the Administrative Office of the Courts.
Most judicial branch functions, including issuing of driver licenses by circuit clerk offices, will be suspended.
Furlough days also are scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 4, and Monday, Oct. 15, as part of the judicial branch’s budget reduction plan.

Splashing around in Paradise
