RPD: Man steals $20K, charged with burglary

RICHMOND — Richmond police say they nabbed a burglar who stole a lockbox containing $20,000 when the suspect was involved in an accident a short time after the theft was reported.

A resident of Maryland Drive reported to police Saturday that his home had been unlawfully entered the previous day and a small lockbox containing  $20,000 in cash was stolen. The cash was part of a settlement the complainant had received, according to a news release from RPD Chief Larry Brock.

Brock said entry had been gained through an unlocked rear window.

During the investigation, Brandon Alexander, 29, of Berea, became a suspect, Brock said. Shortly after the burglary report, Alexander was involved in a traffic accident on the Eastern Bypass at the Exit 87 bridge, according to the RPD release.

Brock said the investigating officer responded to the accident and discovered the stolen safe/lockbox in Alexander’s vehicle. The safe/lockbox was empty, but Alexander had $401 in cash on him, according to the report.

Police say a search of Alexander’s apartment later resulted in the recovery of $17,000 in cash hidden in a sofa.

Alexander was detained and transported to the police station, where he was interviewed and charged with second-degree burglary. He was then booked into the Madison County Detention Center on a $10,000 cash bond.

The recovered money was returned to the rightful owner, Brock said.

Speaks was taken into custody, and her car was searched. Four methadone pills and four diazepam pills were found, according to the police report.

Speaks was charged with public intoxication as well as first- and third-degree possession of controlled substances.
