Liquor store robbers sentenced to 30 years

RICHMOND — Two Lexington men connected to a 2008 armed robbery in Richmond pleaded guilty and were sentenced Friday, Sept. 3 in U.S. District Court.

Jamel White and Christopher Guy Rogers, both 26, both were sentenced to 30 years in prison.

The two men robbed East Main Liquors, 1423 E. Main Street, at gunpoint on June 25, 2008. They made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to police.

As they were leaving the establishment, one of them fired a handgun inside the store. There were several customers present, but no one was injured, according to a Richmond Police report.

On June 27, Rogers and another man robbed the occupants of a residence in the 500 block of E. Irvine Street at gunpoint of a cellular telephone and $10 cash. The robbers confronted the residents outside the house, ordered them inside and onto the floor and demanded money and drugs, according to police.

When the residents could provide neither, the suspects took the cellular phone and money from one of the residents and shot him in the buttocks before fleeing the scene. The resident was not seriously injured.

Rogers admitted in court that he and another man robbed drug dealers in Madison County, according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s office in Lexington.

“According to court documents, Rogers and another individual tried to rob drug dealers in Madison County of drugs and drug money on June 27, 2008. He admitted that he had a firearm during the robbery and that the other individual shot one of the victims as they were leaving the residence,” according to the press release.

White was identified as being involved only in the E. Irvine Street robbery.

A joint investigation undertaken by the Richmond Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives identified Rogers as being involved in both of the robberies described above. He subsequently pled guilty in both cases.

Police seek Family Dollar burglary suspect

Management of Family Dollar, 257 E. Main Street, Richmond, reported Thursday Sept. 2 that a burglary had occurred overnight. Video surveillance shows a suspect entering the store at approximately 3 a.m., according to a statement released Wednesday from Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock. In the video, the suspect can be seen taking cash from the safe and cash registers.

The suspect appears to be a white male wearing sunglasses, a dark colored hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and boots. The suspect keeps his head down in an effort to avoid the video cameras in the store, police said.

The subject can be seen leaving the store through the same door he entered, and appears to lock the door when he leaves.

In other crimes:

• A resident in the 500 block of Lyndale Avenue reported Monday that a ladies’ white-gold, princess-cut diamond cluster ring with three diamonds on each side (one missing) had been stolen from her residence on Aug. 11. The estimated loss is $300.

• A resident in the 500 block of Park Ridge Drive reported Sunday that his parked vehicle had been entered during the early morning hours and a number of items were stolen. There were no signs of forced entry, according to Richmond police. The following items were reported missing: an Olympus E520 SLR camera; three Olympus F36R flashes; an iPod Touch; a Sony 4G CompactFlash memory card; two SanDisk CompactFlash memory cards; a memory card reader; and a battery charger with four rechargeable batteries. The estimated loss is $2,029.

• Officers responded Sunday to Daniel Boone Elementary School to investigate an attempted burglary. Upon arrival, officers found milk crates stacked near a window. It was also noted that a window screen was torn off and the window left open. A subsequent check of the building failed to find any intruders and nothing was found missing.

• A resident in the 600 block of Norwood Drive reported Friday, Sept. 3, that her residence had been entered during the mid-afternoon hours and a number of items were stolen. Entry was gained through an unlocked front window, according to police. The following items were reported missing: two Cingular/AT&T LG prepaid cellular telephones, a Dell Latitude laptop computer and approximately $500 in cash. The estimated loss is $700.

• A complainant reported Monday, Aug. 30, that her daughter’s silver Blessing flute, with case, had been stolen from the band room at Clark-Moores Middle School on June 1. The estimated loss is $787.

• Between Sept. 3 and Sept. 6, Richmond police officers arrested and charged seven people with operating motor vehicles under the influence of alcohol/drugs.

“I always felt like an old person trapped in a young person's body,” said Lambert, who is retiring after 43 years of service to Berea Community School.

Special Olympics return for 18th year at EKU
Next weekend, the Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games return to Eastern Kentucky University campus. This is the 18th consecutive year EKU has hosted the event.
The games will be Friday through June 2. About 1,300 athletes will compete this year.

Assault charges reduced, dismissed by grand jury
Two men arrested in connection with serious assaults had their charges reduced, and in one case dismissed, by a Madison grand jury.
Jerry Wayne Edington, 34, of Berea Road, was charged Jan. 19 with second-degree assault after an altercation at the Blue Moon bar on East Irvine Street, according to a Richmond police report.

Charles W. Peyton, 63, of East Irvine Street, was indicted Wednesday by a Madison grand jury. He used “forcible compulsion” to have sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl between March 1 and May 1 in 1998, according to the indictment.
