Madison Avenue woman charged with meth making

RICHMOND — A complaint about methamphetamine manufacturing in a North Madison Avenue home led to the arrest Wednesday of a 23-year-old woman.

Richmond police officers went to the residence of Brandy M. Maggard at 3:43 a.m. to investigate the complaint, according to a news release from Chief Larry Brock.

Officers searched the residence and discovered approximately 3 grams of methamphetamine, drug-use paraphernalia and numerous items commonly used in making meth, including lithium batteries, coffee filters, camp fuel and “the remains of pseudoephedrine and drain cleaner,” Brock said.

Maggard was charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and first-degree possession of a controlled substance.

A visitor to the home was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and released, according to Brock.

Three businesses struck by thieves

Three Richmond businesses were hit by thieves earlier this week, including one that suffered thousands of dollars in damages, according to a news release from the Richmond Police Department.

A Verizon employee reported Tuesday that several sections of copper wire had been cut from a communications tower on Egate Road. The theft also involved copper ground bus bars and hatch plate groundings. The estimated loss and damage from the theft was $6,000.

A representative of Mikron told police Monday that eight batteries had been stolen from two large trucks at the company over the weekend. The batteries were worth $800 combined.

Also Monday, a representative of Personal Touch Dry Cleaners on Wayne Drive reported that the business had been broken into the previous night and an undisclosed amount of cash was taken. Entry was gained through a rear window, the police said.

Other crime:

• A resident in the 1000 block of Blackwell Court reported Wednesday that her vehicle had been unlawfully entered during the night and a white iPod and a set of silver hoops were stolen.

There were no signs of forced entry, according to the RPD news release. The items were worth $170.

• A resident in the 100 block of Maple Hill Drive reported Tuesday that an aquamarine Roadmaster six-speed bicycle worth $85 had been stolen from her home during the day.

Anyone with information about these cases is asked to call the Richmond Police Department at 623-1162.

Do you support the Richmond City Commission’s proposal to fund three additional firefighters by taking $100,000 originally planned as capital outlay for city parks and another $110,000 by not restoring the uniform allowance for police officers and firefighters?

Yes. The firefighting force was stretched dangerously thin.
Yes. But it should not have been done by cutting the uniform allowance.
Yes. But it should not have been done by cutting capital outlay for parks.
Yes. But I oppose cutting both the uniform allowance and the parks capital outlay.
No. The firefighting force was adequate and police officers and firefighters deserve a uniform allowance and parks need to be expanded/improved.
