RICHMOND —
An “organized group of shoplifters” reportedly stole eight cell phones from Radio Shack in Richmond Centre and also may be connected to a similar shoplifting spree in Georgetown.
Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock reported Wednesday that the phones were stolen Friday from the store.
The store manager told police the items were stolen “by what appeared to be an organized group of shoplifters,” Brock said.
Police say that a group of seven to eight men and women entered the store and spread out into different areas.
“A member of the group distracted employees while the remainder of the group examined other items in the store,” Brock said. “One of the males then purchased a Blue Tooth headset and the group left the store and departed in three vehicles.”
A story inventory was conducted Monday, and the manager found that eight cell phones were missing, including two Apple iPhones (from AT&T), three Boost Mobile LB Marquee (LG brand) phones, all with the model No. 1706913, and three Boost Mobile ZTE Warp phones, all with the model No.1707144.
“It later was learned that the Blue Tooth headset purchased at the Richmond store had been returned to the Radio Shack store in Georgetown for a refund,” Brock said.
The same group was suspected of stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from the Georgetown store as well.
The estimated loss to the Richmond store totaled $2,690, according to police.
Unresponsive man found in vehicle, facing DUI and other charges
Ricky D. Carter, 43, of West Liberty, was arrested Monday and charged with driving under the influence, operating on a suspended driver’s license, third-degree possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Officers were dispatched at 10:40 p.m. to the Kroger parking lot in Richmond Plaza to investigate a report of suspicious activity.
“Officers found Carter passed out in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that was parked and running,” Brock said. “Carter was awakened and it was determined that he was under the influence of an intoxicant.”
He was detained by police and a search of his vehicle produced a spoon with an unknown powder
residue, several hypodermic needles and 15 alprazolam pills.
Two bench warrants also were served on Carter. The first warrant was from Floyd County District Court for failure to pay fines and the other was from Fayette County for failure to appear in court.
Other crimes:
• A resident in the 300 block of Turpin Drive reported Monday that a Philips 42-inch LCD television had been stolen from his unlocked apartment during the mid-evening hours. The estimated loss is $576.
• A resident in the 600 block of Cottonwood Drive reported Sunday that his home had been broken into the prior day, and a Magnavox flat-screen television (36-inch or 42-inch) had been stolen. Entry was gained by forcing open a rear door, according to police.
“The victim also reported that he had loaned his silver 2010 Chevrolet Impala (bearing Kentucky license plate No. 090-KLF) to a relative to use for a short period of time with instructions to return the vehicle on July 18,” Brock said.
The relative failed to return the vehicle and its whereabouts are unknown. The estimated loss is $19,000.
