RICHMOND —
When the Madison County Board of Education meets tonight at 6 p.m. in the Madison Central High School auditorium, all five seats will be filled.
State Education Commissioner Terry Holliday has appointed Beth Brock of Richmond to fill the Division 5 vacancy left by the early June resignation of Betsy Bohannon. Brock will take the oath of office at the beginning of tonight’s meeting.
Brock was selected from a field of applicants who were interviewed by the commissioner, said county schools Superintendent Tommy Floyd.
A longtime school volunteer, Brock served four terms on B. Michael Caudill Middle School’s site-based decision-making council, of which she was vice chair. She also has served two terms on the White Hall Elementary’s school council and has been president and vice president of that school’s parent-teacher organization.
She and her husband, Darrell Brock Jr., are the parents of two students, Grace, a freshman at Madison Central High, and Spencer, a seventh-grader at Caudill Middle.
“It is an honor to serve the students, teachers and parents within Madison County and to be a part of continuing our great tradition of education excellence for every child,” Brock said.
“I have a passion for our schools because I have a vested interest them — my two children, ages 12 and 14,” she said.
The Bell County native said she and her husband chose to live in Madison County when they moved to central Kentucky in large part because of its schools.
The education children receive goes a long way in determining the kind of life they will live, she said.
“My children are receiving an excellent education in our schools,” Brock said, “and I want to help ensure that not just continues but gets even better.”
Brock said she thought Bohannon, who resigned in June after 14 years on the board, had done “a fabulous job” and looks forward to “supporting our kids and their teachers” with similar dedication.
She also plans to be on the ballot in November as a candidate for a full term.
Brock earned a baccalaureate nursing degree from Eastern Kentucky University and works as a clinical analysis for an information technology company.
"We are very excited to have Mrs. Brock join our team,” Floyd said. “In our initial discussions, her emphasis has been on the welfare of our students, and I know her past experience on SBDM councils will serve her well as she helps us continue our district's mission.”
