“With the holidays just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to clear some space for all the company, decorations, and presents that mark this season,” says Ruthi Maslin, director of the Madison County Public Library.
“Thanks to the Friends of the Library, you can clear space while helping out a great cause. Plus, your donations are tax-deductible.”
On Saturday, Dec. 8, the Friends of the Library will host a book drive in Richmond and Berea.
Box or bag no-longer-needed books and drop them off at a convenient location while you are out doing your holiday shopping. The drop-off in Berea will be from 9 a.m. until noon in the Berea Baptist Church parking lot, 310 Chestnut St. The Richmond drop-off will be from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Lowe’s parking lot, 814 Eastern Bypass.
Books donated will be used for the annual Friends Book Sale in the spring, said Kara Beth Brunner, president of the Friends. Each year, the library support organization sells used books, raising thousands of dollars to support library programs and help fill needs at the library. One of the Friends’ biggest annual initiatives is supporting the summer reading program at the library. This past summer, more than 3,000 adults and youth participated in the program.
“What’s not to love about the book drive and sale?” Brunner asked. “Used books get a second life, and in that process, we all support the ongoing work of promoting reading in our libraries and community. It’s win-win for all of us.”
Brunner said book donations should be brought to the drop-off locations rather than the library branches. Volunteers will be on hand to unload book donations, so donors won’t even have to get out of their cars. Free hot chocolate and cookies will add to the festive atmosphere.
