Man indicted for plumbing theft
A man who allegedly charged more than $5,000 in plumbing supplies to the account of a company he did not work for was indicted last week on two counts of theft by deception.
James Mason Shanks, 38, of Ballard Drive, faces two felony counts of theft by deception in connection with alleged thefts in 2006 from Ferguson Enterprises and Hogg Enterprises.
The thefts relate to purchases of plumbing supplies from both companies, according to the indictment.
According to Richmond police, Shanks had charged the items to the account of a company by claiming to be an employee. The indictment accuses Shanks of “creating the false impression that he was acting as an employee of Kelly Construction and charging the purchase of the supplies to the Kelly Construction account.”
The thefts are alleged to have occurred between July 1 and Aug. 30 of 2006, according to the indictment.
Shanks also was indicted last month by a Madison County grand jury on one count each of theft by unlawful taking and receiving a stolen firearm as well as a second-degree persistent felony offender charge.
Those charges stem from Shanks allegedly having a gun reported stolen from a home on Hawthorne Drive.
An arraignment on the new charges is scheduled for Feb. 18 at 11:30 a.m. in Madison Circuit Court.
If convicted on the new charges, Shanks could be sentenced to up to five years in prison on each count.
Stolen gun
Two men were indicted last week on gun-related charges after one allegedly stole a handgun from the other while the gun already was reported stolen.
Mathew Tatum, 20, of an apartment in the 100 block of Hager Drive, was indicted on a single count of receiving a stolen firearm.
According to the indictment, Tatum is alleged to have been in possession of a Bersa .380-caliber handgun “knowing or having reason to know that it had been stolen” on Dec. 22.
The other man, Jarod Stokley, 19, of the 200 block of Jolly Ridge, was indicted on a first-degree burglary charge for allegedly breaking into Tatum’s residence on Dec. 23 and stealing the gun.
Because Stokley allegedly had the gun while “in immediate flight” from the apartment, the burglary charge is a Class B felony punishable by 10 to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Tatum faces up to five years in prison if convicted on the receiving stolen property charge.
Stokely’s arraignment is scheduled for Feb. 18 at 11:30 a.m. in Madison Circuit Court, while Tatum is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at 11:30 a.m.
