Charges against a Berea man accused of abusing an 82-year-old woman were amended Wednesday to fourth-degree assault.
William D. Kaylor, 47, of the 100 block of Silver Creek Road, pleaded guilty to the charge when he appeared in Madison District Court for a preliminary hearing in front of Judge Brandy O. Brown.
Kaylor was arrested Nov. 18 and charged with abusing an adult, which is a Class C felony.
He was the caretaker of an elderly woman who was rushed to St. Joseph Berea Hospital on Nov. 18 because of reportedly overdosing on sleeping medication, according to Capt. Ken Clark, public information officer for the Berea Police Department.
When the woman became responsive, she mentioned being abused by her caretaker, Clark said.
“She alleged that Kaylor choked her and threw cold water on her,” Clark said previously. “There were bruises around her neck, so our investigators checked into it. They believed there was enough evidence to place the charge against Mr. Kaylor.”
The commonwealth decided to amend the charge after further investigation, said Madison County Attorney Marc Robbins.
Kaylor received a 12-month sentence which was probated for two years, Robbins said.
As part of his probation, Kaylor is not allowed to have contact with the victim.

Even at 12 years old, Brenda Lambert knew she wanted to be a teacher one day.
“I always felt like an old person trapped in a young person's body,” said Lambert, who is retiring after 43 years of service to Berea Community School. -
Special Olympics return for 18th year at EKU
Next weekend, the Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games return to Eastern Kentucky University campus. This is the 18th consecutive year EKU has hosted the event.
The games will be Friday through June 2. About 1,300 athletes will compete this year. -
Assault charges reduced, dismissed by grand jury
Two men arrested in connection with serious assaults had their charges reduced, and in one case dismissed, by a Madison grand jury.
Jerry Wayne Edington, 34, of Berea Road, was charged Jan. 19 with second-degree assault after an altercation at the Blue Moon bar on East Irvine Street, according to a Richmond police report. -

Paradise Cove open through Labor Day

Man is indicted on additional sex charge involving teen in 1998
A man already accused of sex abuse in November 2011 has been indicted on a charge of first-degree rape involving a child in 1998.
Charles W. Peyton, 63, of East Irvine Street, was indicted Wednesday by a Madison grand jury. He used “forcible compulsion” to have sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl between March 1 and May 1 in 1998, according to the indictment. -
