Police are searching for two white males who allegedly assaulted and robbed a man who was walking down a Richmond street late Saturday night.
A man told police Sunday he had been robbed the night before while walking on Baker Court near E. Main Street, Sgt. Willard Reardon, public relations officer for the Richmond Police Department, stated in a press release.
The victim, who has not been named, said he had just left a friend’s house when he was approached by the two men, Reardon said.
“He stated that one of the males punched him in the face twice and took his wallet, which contained $15 in cash and personal identification cards,” Reardon said.
The two suspects then allegedly fled toward E. Main Street.
The victim went to Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center for treatment.
“The victim had obvious bruising around his eye and nose,” Reardon said.
A description of the suspects was not available.
The investigation is ongoing, Reardon said.
A similar crime was reported that night at nearby Swifty’s gas station.
A gas station employee told police he had been accosted by two white males who pushed him inside the building and demanded money. Once inside, the suspects took six cartons of cigarettes and money from the cash register.
One of the men was armed with a baseball bat and the other held an item under this shirt that the employee believed to be a handgun.
Police still are investigating, but have not linked to two incidents.
Other crimes reported:
• A Richmond man was arrested Monday after police discovered drugs in his possession during a traffic stop on Berea Road.
Clyde E. Tipton, 35, of Ellis Court in Richmond, was arrested for second-degree and third-degree possession of controlled substances and operating a vehicle on an expired operator’s license.
Reardon said police found one and one-half Lortab pills and two Darvocet pills in Tipton’s possession.
He was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.
• On Sunday, a resident of an apartment on the 100 block of Manna Drive in Richmond reported the theft of her prescription medication from her home, including Diazepam, Endocet and Skelaxin (valium, pain medication and a muscle relaxer). She told police she suspected the theft occurred the previous evening when she had guests in her home. A suspect has been named, Reardon said.
• Police arrested Cleveland W. Washington, 33, of Richmond, on Monday for theft by unlawful taking under $300. He was detained by Kohl’s employees for allegedly shoplifting $140 worth of goods from the store.

Special Olympics return for 18th year at EKU
Next weekend, the Special Olympics Kentucky State Summer Games return to Eastern Kentucky University campus. This is the 18th consecutive year EKU has hosted the event.
The games will be Friday through June 2. About 1,300 athletes will compete this year. -
Assault charges reduced, dismissed by grand jury
Two men arrested in connection with serious assaults had their charges reduced, and in one case dismissed, by a Madison grand jury.
Jerry Wayne Edington, 34, of Berea Road, was charged Jan. 19 with second-degree assault after an altercation at the Blue Moon bar on East Irvine Street, according to a Richmond police report. -

Paradise Cove open through Labor Day
Opening day of Paradise Cove Family Aquatic Center coincided with a spike in temperatures Friday which reached 90 degrees. The facility, located in Richmond’s Lake Reba Park, will be open through Sept. 3. Regular hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Man is indicted on additional sex charge involving teen in 1998
A man already accused of sex abuse in November 2011 has been indicted on a charge of first-degree rape involving a child in 1998.
Charles W. Peyton, 63, of East Irvine Street, was indicted Wednesday by a Madison grand jury. He used “forcible compulsion” to have sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl between March 1 and May 1 in 1998, according to the indictment. -
