Summer Carillon Concert Series at Berea College begins June 8

Performers from Portugal, Washington, D.C., Michigan and Kentucky will be featured in the 2008 Summer Carillon Concert Series at Berea College. The Music Department will present a series of concerts on Draper Tower’s 56-bell carillon, the largest in the state of Kentucky.

Concerts will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on the first or second Monday of each month, and will last about one hour. Seating in the College Quadrangle will be provided and a video monitor will allow persons at ground level to view the player in action. Admission is free for all events.

Performers include: Jonathan Lehrer, June 8, Carillonneur of “Cast in Bronze” at Renaissance Festivals; The LVSITANVS Carillon Duo, Ana and Sara Elias from Portugal, July 6; John Courter, Carillonneur of Berea College, Aug. 3; to be announced, Sept. 7.

The first concert, on Monday, will feature Jonathan Lehrer, who began his carillon studies at Yale University in 2000. He is also a graduate of the Belgian Royal Carillon School and was a Laureate in the Queen Fabiola International Carillon Competition, conducted in Mechelen, Belgium in September, 2008. He has played four concert tours spanning the U.S., Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands. Since 2008, he has been performing the “Cast in Bronze” theatrical carillon show on the Mobile Millennium Carillon at Renaissance festivals across the country. When not performing, Jon enjoys studying tai chi and hang-gliding.

Visitors may greet the evening’s artist at the entrance to the Draper Building five minutes after the concert.
