After giving 50 haircuts Monday in Eastern Kentucky University’s Powell Building, Lane E. Taylor of Carey Lane Salon helped the Alpha Omicron Pi sorority raise $534 for arthritis research.
The sorority’s annual Cut-A-Thon features Taylor and two of his stylists who volunteer their time and talents, giving all the proceeds to the sorority for its philanthropy, which is the National Arthritis Association.
“We’ve been doing this for years, but this is about our 20th with Greek organizations,” Taylor said, who is the owner of the salon. “This is something that is a win-win for everybody. The sorority gets to raise money and it goes to a good cause.”
The sorority raised $500 last year for the organization.
“I think that $10 is a good price for college students to pay for a haircut,” said Sorority President Crystal Winfree.
Kristin Lehman, who is the sorority’s philanthropy president, said she did not know much about arthritis until joining the sorority.
“When you hear the word arthritis, you automatically think of old people,” she said. “But, it affects more people than you would think. It makes you feel good, especially when you have it in your family.”
Lehman is grateful for the help from Carey Lane Salons and their willingness to work for free.
“It’s so nice for (Taylor) to bring his girls out and do this,” she said. “All they are getting is a free lunch. They’re just doing it because they care.”
