The Madison County Sheriff’s Department is inviting the community out for an afternoon of fun Sunday in an effort to raise money for the agency’s honor guard.
Day Out With the Deputies will be 2 to 6 p.m. at the Madison County Fairgrounds, according to a news release from spokesperson Deputy Willard Reardon. The event will feature inflatables, carnival games and face painting, all of which will be free.
Raffle items, cornhole tournaments, a dunking booth and a cake walk also will take place for a small donation, Reardon said. Ronald McDonald will be at the event to greet children from 3 to 5 p.m.
There also will be an emergency vehicle display, including a helicopter from the Lexington Metro Police Department, Reardon said. The event will have balloons and coloring books, a fishing booth, balloon toss, egg race, football toss and prizes.
The fairgrounds are at 3237 Old Irvine Road just 3.8 miles east of Richmond on KY 52. Admission to the festival is free.
The main purpose of a law enforcement honor guard to is be present, render all appropriate and professional honors and show respect to grieving families if an officer or emergency service worker is killed in the line of duty. The honor guard performs the same duties if a retiree or dignitary has passed away.
“The honor guard is also very active and committed in numerous community events such as leading parades, providing a color guard detail for local schools at various games and events as well as providing assistance and support for other organizations and communities who are not able to do so,” Reardon said.
The Madison County Sheriff’s Department honor guard members are Sgt. Mike Marcum, Deputy Chris Sizemore, Deputy Derek Thomas, Deputy Clyne York and Deputy Phillip Sturgill. The team has a full-time department chaplain, Deputy Scott Sears.
The honor guard needs to raise $4,000 for uniforms and equipment, the release stated.
“Your support and donations are greatly appreciated and we look forward to seeing everyone there,” Reardon said.
