RPD tracks down woman accused of fleeing from police

RICHMOND — Richmond police chose to end a police pursuit Thursday because of  public safety concerns, but they were able to track down the driver the next day, according to Richmond police Chief Larry Brock.

Letisha S. Stamper, 35, was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, first-degree fleeing and evading police, theft by unlawful taking (under $500), reckless driving, disregarding a stop sign, possession of drug paraphernalia, illegal possession of a legend drug and speeding.

Police received a report Thursday of a shoplifting incident at Tractor Supply, according to a news release issued by Brock.

It was reported that the shoplifter fled the store in a black Chevrolet Cavalier, the release stated.

An officer responding to the call saw the Cavalier traveling west on the Robert R. Martin Bypass near Red House Road, and he turned to initiate a traffic stop.

The car did not stop and turned onto Trooper Cunningham Memorial Highway (Hwy 1986). After turning right on Red House Road, the vehicle continued back toward town, Brock said.

The officer pursued the car to Madison Hills Boulevard and then onto North Third Street. At that point, the RPD decided to end the chase “due to the reckless driving of the operator and the risk presented to the public.”

Police officers later determined that Stamper was the vehicle’s driver, Brock said. The RPD alleges that she left Tractor Supply without paying for some clothing, valued at a minimum of $35.

The investigating officer found Stamper and the black Cavalier at her home Friday on Villa Drive. She was taken into custody, and a search of her residence resulted in the discovery of drug paraphernalia and nine prescription pills (noncontrolled substance), Brock said.

She was taken to the Madison County Detention Center, where she remained Monday evening under a $2,500 bond, according to a jail officer.

According to online records, this is the 11th time Stamper has been jailed in Madison County since July 2008.
