RICHMOND —
Kentucky State Police apprehended a Lexington man charged with escaping from a western Kentucky jail after they found him unloading items from a stolen truck in Richmond, according to a news release from the agency.
Joshua L. McDowell, 22, was arrested after police received a report Thursday evening that a possible stolen vehicle was traveling south on Interstate 75, according to Post 7 spokesman Trooper Paul Blanton.
Troopers located the vehicle, which had been reported stolen Tuesday from Lexington, on South Keeneland Drive, the release states. The KSP suspects that the property McDowell was unloading also was stolen.
McDowell was charged with receiving stolen property (under $10,000). McDowell also was wanted on charges of second-degree escape from the Grayson County Detention Center and kidnapping.
A passenger in the vehicle, Christie M. Hanley, 27, of Lexington, was charged with receiving stolen property (under $10,000). She also was served with warrants from Fayette County on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
McDowell escaped the detention center in western Kentucky on June 29 by climbing a fence and fleeing on foot, the KSP reported. He went to an area restaurant and asked an 18-year-old man for a ride, claiming his car had broken down on the Western Kentucky Parkway.
Once on the road, McDowell told the man he was an escaped inmate and took over driving, according to the KSP. McDowell drove to downtown Lexington where he let himself out.
McDowell originally was serving a three-year sentence for third-degree burglary at the Grayson County Detention Center.
Trooper Bobby Edwards is the investigating officer at the Richmond scene, and he was assisted by Trooper Michael Keeton and Trooper Gregory Newman, Blanton said in the release.
