Employees hold alleged shoplifter on ground until police arrive

RICHMOND — When Richmond Police responded to the report of a disturbance in the Kroger parking lot at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, the found two men holding a woman on the ground in the parking lot, according to Police Chief Larry Brock.

The men turned out to be Kroger employees who were detaining a Floyd County woman, Kelly R. Key, 24, of Allen, Ky., for robbery following a shoplifting incident at Kroger.

The employees told police they had observed Key take a $7.99 bottle of nail polish and leave the store without paying, Brock said.

When the employees attempted to detain her, Key resisted and began fighting and bit one of the employee’s arm with enough force to puncture the skin and leave an abrasion, the chief said.

Key was charged with first-degree robbery and lodged in the Madison County Detention Center, where she remained Wednesday under $10,000 cash bond.

Also on Tuesday, a resident in the 1100 block of Linden Avenue told police his bicycle had been stolen from in front of his residence during the evening. It is a gray-and-black men’s 26-inch, 27-speed Iguana valued at $700.

On Monday, a representative of Denny Sod Company told police that four wheels had been stolen from a company utility trailer parked in the 1400 block of E. Main Street the night of Sept. 25. The rusted 16-inch eight-lug wheels with Courser R/D 8-ply tires, size 285-85/R16, were valued at $1,000.

An apartment resident in the 1300 block of Lancaster Avenue also reported Monday that a Scotty Cameron Newport 1.5 golf putter valued at $280 had been stolen during the past month.

Berea crimes/arrests:

• David Long, 27, Ridgewood Drive, was arrested Sunday and charged with operating motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drug, third offense, operating on a suspended operator’s license and failure of owner to maintain required insurance, first offense.

•A Chestnut Street woman, 31, was arrested Friday for theft by unlawful taking under $500.

• A resident in the 100 block of Silver Creek Drive reported Friday that a red and white Honda CRF 70 dirt bike was taken from the backyard of the residence. The estimated loss is $900.

• A resident in the 200 block of Washington Avenue reported Sept. 25 that an Acer laptop computer, a PSP PlayStation and a PS2 game system were stolen from their home. The estimated loss is $650.

    Two men accused of killing a Richmond couple for money and then hiding their bodies in graves along Tates Creek Road were indicted Wednesday on capital charges by a Madison grand jury.
    Matthew Denholm, 27, and Daniel Keene, 26, were both indicted on two counts each of murder, kidnapping and abuse of a corpse charges. They also were each indicted on tampering with physical evidence and first-degree burglary charges.
    The indictments were returned around 2 p.m. and read by Judge Jean C. Logue. Commonwealth’s Attorney David Smith said he expected Denholm and Keene would be arraigned in Madison Circuit Court in mid-June.

  • 4 whooping cough cases confirmed

    Four cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in Madison County as of Wednesday, according to local health department officials.
    Whooping cough, or pertussis, may start out with symptoms similar to a cold (runny nose and mild cough), but after one to two weeks develops into a severe cough.
