RICHMOND —
Although they call themselves knights, they don’t wear shining armor. But this week they donated 200 new coats to keep school children warm this winter.
Members of the local Knights of Columbus chapter met Tuesday with school district officials and directors of the Madison County elementary schools family resource centers to deliver the coats.
The $3,600 to purchase the coats came from individual donations by the knights as well as from three local medical practices, Central Kentucky Surgery, Kentucky Surgery Center and Madison Pediatrics, said Dr. Ken Kessler, who was in charge of the project.
A Catholic fraternal order that supports local church and community projects, the local K of C also helps support a food pantry, Habitat for Humanity, the MARC Center, a workshop for handicapped adults; and Madison County Right to Life, Kessler said.
Coats for Kids is a national K of C project that was taken up locally this year for the first time, he said.
After seeing how appreciative the family resource center directors are and hearing them tell about childrens’ needs, the K of C members present said they want to provide even more coats next year.
“This is great timing,” said Dr. Kevin Hub, an assistant superintendent of schools who oversees family resource centers in the Madison County School District. “It may be nearly 80 degrees today, buy the winter chill will be felt soon. Now parents know they will have one less coat they will have to buy.”
