Sometimes, it takes a community to put dinner on one table.
That is the goal this year for the Home Meal Delivery program, which is providing Thanksgiving dinners to those in the community who otherwise would not have the meal.
“Last year, we did 425 meals,” said Diana Ackerman of Home Meals Delivery.
Volunteers are used to prepare and deliver the meals, she said.
Each meal includes turkey and dressing, ham, green beans, corn, cranberry sauce, a roll and homemade pumpkin cake.
The holiday season is an extension of the program’s year-round service, which has provided 55 to 60 meals each day to Madison County residents since 1980, Ackerman said.
Most of the food is prepared at the Eastern Kentucky University Baptist Campus Center.
“We work all week on doing the cakes, dressing and the cranberry sauce” for the Thanksgiving meal, she said.
Each box has a note telling the history of the first Thanksgiving dinner between the pilgrims and Native Americans.
It takes between 30 and 40 volunteers to cook the meals and about 80 people to help deliver them to the homes, she said.
Those in need of a Thanksgiving Day meal should call the Madison County Fire Department at 624-4774 or 624-4775. Those needing meals in Berea can call the Berea Fire Department at 986-2898. All meal requests need to be made no later than Nov. 19.
All callers must give their name, phone number and the number of meals being requested.
The Home Meals Delivery programs asks that those receiving a Thanksgiving meal basket from another source refrain from requesting a meal so others can be served.
Those interested in volunteering should call 623-3294 from 7 a.m. to noon and 661-5101 afterward.
Volunteers wanting to help deliver meals will need to be at the EKU Baptist Campus Center at 325 University Drive no later than 10:30 a.m. Thanksgiving Day. All meals are to be delivered by noon.
