Police accuse maintenance man of renting apartments, keeping money
Police arrested an apartment maintenance man for renting apartments and keeping the money for himself after the property owner alerted police to the theft.
Bobby G. Hoskins, 44, of McDaniel Avenue, was arrested Monday after police allege he rented out several units in an apartment complex on McDaniel Avenue and kept the security deposits and rent for himself.
According to Richmond Police Department spokesman Sgt. Willard Reardon, Hoskins was employed by the property owner as a maintenance man.
Reardon said the property owner reported the theft in early June, and Hoskins is alleged to have collected more than $2,000 before being caught.
He was charged with theft by failure to make required disposition and arrested at his residence. He was lodged in the Madison County Detention Center.
Receiving stolen property
A Martin Drive man was arrested and charged with felony receiving stolen property after police allege he stole several items from his girlfriend as they were being evicted from an apartment on Wayne Drive.
Keith A. Cates, 37, is accused of stealing a Kenmore washer and dryer set, a Sanyo television and a DVD/VCR from the apartment he and his ex-girlfriend were being evicted from in June.
The woman filed a police report after the items were stolen, and police later determined that Cates sold the washer and dryer to Tommy’s Appliances without permission, Reardon said.
Cates surrendered to police on Monday and also was charged with fourth-degree assault and terroristic threatening in relation to a prior domestic incident, Reardon said.
The other items have not been recovered.
Turpin Drive assault
A man reported Saturday that he was assaulted and robbed outside a Turpin Drive apartment.
The man told police he was lured outside the apartment, where four men attacked him and struck him with a metal pipe, Reardon said.
The suspects allegedly stole his wallet during the assault, Reardon said, but the wallet was later recovered with only $272 in cash missing.
The man suffered minor injuries, Reardon said.

Reardon said officers found 7.8 ounces of marijuana, 22 OxyContin tablets, 10 Lortab pills, a Percocet pill, a scale and other paraphernalia during a search of Johnson’s car.
