Downtown gallery hop set for Saturday

By Brittany Davenport

Downtown Richmond will stay up late for the Second Saturday Gallery Hop/Art Walk on Saturday. The event — from 5 to 8 p.m. — will feature never-before-seen art exhibits, a wood carving demonstration, a wood turner, a re-enactment clothing display, a pottery demonstration, door prizes and refreshments.

The art community is struggling, said Ginny Rollins, event coordinator. The event is a way to “buy local and support the local small businesses,” she said.

While each event hosts different artists each time, Saturday’s will offer a brand new display at Jett & Hall Clothing. Tonya Rogers of Stitch Witch Designs will display her historic costume reproductions for battle re-enactments and events.

For the first time, paintings by Luke Davidson of Richmond will be featured at the Madison County Public Library, along with local photographer Barbara Reynolds and her Kentucky landscapes photographs. The Bennett House will feature the contemporary unusual art of Richmond artist Sallyann Burton-Gullett. She uses mixed media as well as acrylics, pen, ink and colored pencils.

Woodturning artist Larry Bertram of Mt. Olivet will showcase his wood works from 5 to 7 p.m. at Chestnut Tree Gallery & Still Waters Studio and from 5 to 8 p.m., artist R.M. Rollins will demonstrate how he creates his line of Kindlin’ Critters using honeysuckle bushes.

Keramos Ceramic Gallery will showcase the new functional and sculptural works of potter Buddy Dobbins and a demonstration for those interested in learning how to create pottery.

Visitors can take a leap across town to visit the Pocket Gallery off the Eastern Bypass to meet local artists James and Erin Gray and see their photography, wood burnings and batik creations over a glass of wine and a taste of cheese.

“It’s a fun downtown event,” Rollins said.

Even if visitors do not plan to purchase any of the artwork, Rollins said she hopes people come out just to admire the work.

“Artists just need to be supported,” she said.
