RICHMOND —
Several events are planned at Eastern Kentucky University for campus and community members in celebration of Constitution Week.
The week will kick off with “The Electoral College, The Constitution, and the 2012 Election,” on Monday, Sept. 17, presented by Dr. John Heyrman, associate professor and chairman of Political Science at Berea College. The program, free and open to the public, will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Grand Reading Room of EKU’s John Grant Crabbe Library. Refreshments will be served.
The observance will conclude on Thursday, Sept. 20, in Room 108 of John Grant Crabbe Library, with a 3:30 p.m. panel discussion on “The Civil War and the Constitution: How Each Affected the Other.”
Join panelists Dr. Paul Foote, Dr. Will Hatcher, Dr. Matthew Howell, Dr. Jane Rainey and Dr. Randall Swain from the EKU Department of Government as they discuss the Constitution, the Civil War and their impact on each other. Light refreshments will be served.
The annual observance was officially enacted on Aug. 2, 1956, by President Dwight Eisenhower from a congressional resolution petitioned by the Daughters of the American Revolution.
George W. Bush officially declared the inception of Constitution Week in September 2002. The purpose of the observance week is to promote study and education about the constitution which was originally adopted by the American Congress of the Confederation on Sept. 17, 1787.

• Constitution Trivial Pursuit, Wednesday, Sept. 19, 12:20-1:10 p.m., Discovery Room, Noel Studio.
The events are sponsored by EKU’s Department of Government, Student Life and University Housing.

Ann Laurence has been named publisher of the Richmond Register, succeeding Nick Lewis, who held the post for the previous eight and a half years.
Keith Blevins, Community Newspaper Holdings Inc. chief operating officer announced Laurence’s appointment Monday. -
