RICHMOND —
Two Richmond women were arrested Sunday after police say they were passed out in an apartment while their four small children played outside in the road.
Malbelna DeJesus, 21, and Rita DeJesus, 29, both of Sara Leigh Drive, were charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, according to Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock.
Officers were sent to the 400 block of Sara Leigh Drive at 7:26 p.m. after receiving a report about several small unsupervised children playing near and in the road, Brock said in a news release.
When the officers arrived, they found four children, ranging in age from 21 months to 5 years, playing in front of a residence, Brock said.
“When officers approached the residence in an attempt to locate the parents of the children, they found the door locked,” Brock said in the release.
Officers reported they could see Malbelna DeJesus through a window, asleep on the couch, but several knocks on the window did not wake her.
Malbelna DeJesus finally woke up “just prior to officers having to force entry into the apartment,” Brock said.
Officers reported detecting the odor of an alcoholic beverage on Malbelna DeJesus after speaking with her. They also discovered Rita DeJesus asleep on the floor in a bedroom beside a 2 1/2-year-old child, Brock said.
“She was awakened and also exhibited signs of alcohol intoxication,” the chief said.
Three of the children found outside were Malbelna DeJesus’ and one was the child of Rita DeJesus, the release stated. The two women were charged and taken to the Madison County Detention Center.
The children were taken into custody by child-protective services, Brock said.
Tools stolen from storage unit
A complainant told police Tuesday that a storage unit rented by his company at A&A Storage, Catalpa Loop, had been broken into between Sept. 5 and Monday. Entry was gained by cutting off the lock, according to the RPD news release.
The tools taken were worth $5,289. They included a Troy Bilt 2700 psi power washer; a Dewalt framing nailer; a Kobalt 30-gallon air compressor; a 300-foot 3/8-inch air hose; a Yamaha generator; a Stihl concrete saw; a Homelite 3000 psi power washer; two Bosch 18-volt cordless hammer drills; a Hawk hot air welder; two safety harness kits; a Werner 24-foot collapsible ladder; and a Stihl blower, model #BG55.
Other burglaries:
• A resident in an apartment in the 100 block of Manna Drive reported Monday that his residence had been broken into the previous day and several items, worth about $1,350, were stolen. Those were a Dell laptop computer and a number of rings, bracelets and necklaces.
