BEREA — A man is accused of committing sexual abuse with a gun.
Though Berea Police would not provide many details of the ongoing investigation involving Joseph Maziarz, 24, Sgt. Ken Clark said the man was arrested July 2 and charged with first-degree sexual abuse, a Class D felony.
After discovering Maziarz had previously been convicted of a felony, officers also charged him July 5 with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, also a Class D felony, in relation to the firearm he allegedly used to commit the sexual abuse crime, Clark said.
Maziarz was arrested in December 2006 and charged with second-degree burglary and receiving stolen property, firearm.
Maziarz remains in the Madison County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond, but has a hold from circuit court for a possible probation or parole violation, according to a jail official.
He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing today at 9 a.m.
Arrest in $15,000 theft
A Berea man was arrested July 1 after he reportedly swiped more than $15,000 in items, including a handgun, from a home. Randy Gabbard, 27, also was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Gabbard reportedly sold the gun after stealing it, Clark said.
“We found it,” Clark said. “Of course, he denied stealing it, but it was one of the items listed in the burglary.”
Gabbard is charged with receiving stolen property, $10,000 or more, a Class D felony; theft by unlawful taking, over $300, a Class D felony; receiving stolen property, handgun, a Class D felony; second-degree fleeing or evading police, on foot, a Class A misdemeanor; and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, a Class D felony.
He is lodged in the Madison County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond, according to a jail official.
Other Berea arrests:
• Officers arrested Coty L. Isaacs, 21, July 5 on a warrant for fraudulent use of a credit card, under $500, which is a Class D felony.
• Joshua Newby, 28, of Berea, was arrested and charged Friday with receiving stolen property, over $500, which is a Class D felony.
• Officers July 7 arrested 49-year-old Brian McIntosh of McKee, on a warrant for parole violation.
• Two Berea residents were arrested July 4 and charged with shoplifting, less than $500, at the Berea Walmart.
• A 29-year-old Berea woman was accused July 5 of shoplifting less than $500 of merchandise from Walmart and arrested.
• On July 6, police arrested a 21-year-old Danville man and charged him with fourth-degree assault.
Other Berea crimes:
• A resident of the 1000 block of Brooklyn Boulevard reported July 6 that several items were stolen from an unlocked vehicle outside the home. The items, valued at $600, included a Dell laptop computer, and an iPod Nano and accessories.
• Another resident of Brooklyn Boulevard, in the 2000 block, reported July 7 that basketball shoes and an iPod Touch were stolen from an unlocked vehicle. The items’ value is $335.
• On July 8, someone reportedly smashed the passenger window of a car parked on Orchard Street and carried away a purse. The purse and contents were valued at $100, and the estimated damage to the car is $300.
• A Pioneer CD player, valued at $100, was reported stolen July 8 from an unlocked vehicle on Rogers Street.

Grand jury indicts men in double-murder
Two men accused of killing a Richmond couple for money and then hiding their bodies in graves along Tates Creek Road were indicted Wednesday on capital charges by a Madison grand jury.
Matthew Denholm, 27, and Daniel Keene, 26, were both indicted on two counts each of murder, kidnapping and abuse of a corpse charges. They also were each indicted on tampering with physical evidence and first-degree burglary charges.
The indictments were returned around 2 p.m. and read by Judge Jean C. Logue. Commonwealth’s Attorney David Smith said he expected Denholm and Keene would be arraigned in Madison Circuit Court in mid-June. -
4 whooping cough cases confirmed
Four cases of whooping cough have been confirmed in Madison County as of Wednesday, according to local health department officials.
Whooping cough, or pertussis, may start out with symptoms similar to a cold (runny nose and mild cough), but after one to two weeks develops into a severe cough. -

Kentucky fallen officers honored at annual ceremony
The best part about Alexandria Police Department Officer James Sticklen’s job was being able to work with kids almost every day.
He was the school resource officer Campbell County Middle School.
“He always used to say there are no bad kids, they just make bad decisions,” said his wife, Laurie. -

Republican Jonathan Shell and Democrat Bradley “Bud” Montgomery will face off in November for the 36th District state representative seat.
Shell received 810 votes in Madison County, beating Republican opponent Nathan Mick by only 54 votes. -
Woman attacked on Berea College walking track
A woman on the Berea College walking track suffered minor injuries Saturday when an unknown man struck her in the face twice, according to Berea Police Public Information Officer Jake Reed.
