Flatwoods Thanksgiving service Tuesday

Can you believe next Thursday will be Thanksgiving? Time does fly, doesn’t it? Didn’t you just love the beautiful warm, sunny weather last week? Alas, it has taken a “fall-ish” turn this week.

Waco Elementary School has been the place to be the last couple of weeks. On Wednesday of last week, a beautifully moving program was presented by the students honoring our veterans. Letters of thanks and appreciation for our men and women in uniform were written by students in the upper elementary grades, then read during the program; other grade levels drew pictures and wrote cards of appreciation which were on display. Veteran relatives and friends of students, faculty and staff were invited to attend and/or send memorabilia to school which brought this particular assembly close and personal to those present. Thanks to recently-returning soldier (and Waco parent,) Sgt. Morgan, not only for his service to our country, but for being our special guest speaker. Another thank you goes out to all of those who worked so hard to make this Veterans Day special for all of us.

On Monday, Waco PTO members, family and friends were treated to a great performance by the first grade students who showed off their singing abilities with a few Thanksgiving numbers. (Kudos to the students and music teacher Ms. Schuette for an outstanding job!)

Speaking of an outstanding job, Mrs. Schuette and the Waco Chorus performed with other students across our district earlier this month at Hiram Brock Auditorium. All of the performers, including the teachers, were given a standing ovation for doing such an excellent job!

Areachurches, as well as area “kitchens,” are getting ready for the “big day of feasting and fellowship.” Flatwoods Christian Church will have its annual Thanksgiving service Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. The choir from Rice Station Christian Church will be singing and John McCord, minister of Salem Christian Church, will be the speaker. A special offering will be taken for Haiti Christian Mission.

Speaking of feasting, several Wacoans were feasting Saturday evening at the American Legion Post 70 annual Oyster Supper. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Estes Jr., along with Earl Estes Sr., were among those who traveled to Estill County and chowed down on deep-fried oysters, fish, hushpuppies, french fries, cole slaw and desserts. No one left hungry and that’s for sure! (I’m ready to go again, aren’t you Fred? Thanks for the invitation and ride, Bill Palahunich!) Those folks can cook!

Happy birthday wishes go out to: Ray Agee and Summer Rosencrans on Nov. 10; to J. Dillon on Nov. 14; to Joyce Rose, Teresa Marshall and Sandy Jackson on Nov. 16; to Patsy Chenault on Nov. 17; and to Sherry Winkler on Nov. 18. Javan Dunn will turn another year older on Nov. 22 (his 7th, I believe). Ricky Dean Centers and Anthony Shawn Brown will blow out their candles next Thursday on “Turkey Day,” Nov. 26.

Deepest sympathies are extended to the family of Modena Perkins who passed away over the weekend. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you, especially so soon after Gary’s death.
