Soil testing program ends Nov. 30
This is the final month of free soil testing at the Extension Office. I also will be accepting soil samples at the Berea Library from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 20, and at the Richmond Library from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 23. Please bring enough soil to fill a sandwich bag, about a pint of soil.
If you are unsure of how to take a soil sample, call me at the Extension Office, 623-4072, or visit http://www.ca.uky.edu/agc/pubs/agr/agr16/agr16.pdf. This test will determine soil pH (soil acidity or alkalinity) and whether you need to apply other necessary nutrients including phosphorus and potassium. You will receive research-based recommendations on the fertility needs of your landscape.

Is MSG (monosodium glutamate) harmful?
Monsodium gluatamate (MSG) is a flavor enhancer often added to Chinese food, soups, processed meats and canned vegetables. The use of MSG remains controversial despite a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) statement that it is safe. Because of this, the FDA requires that whenever MSG is added, that it be listed on the label.
