Veterans have long-awaited reunion

Tim Jones

If you drove through Union City since Sunday evening, you will notice a pile of rubble where the old Masonic Lodge has stood for many years. It was torn down Sunday evening and now there are trucks and dumpsters on site for clean up. The space will be used for parking at the Ruritan Building and other community activities.

The gospel quartet HIS Own will be opening the concert by the Nelons at Big Hill Christian Church, Goggins Lane, tonight at 7 p.m. The Nelons are a nationally known Southern Gospel Trio based in Dallas, Ga. This should be a great night of gospel music.

With Veterans Day coming up next week, here is good story that recently developed. Slick Conner of Union City and Daniel Lowder of North Carolina had worked side by side in the U.S. Army during the war in Korea. In October of 1954, the two parted company and lost contact when they left Korea.

In the past year, the Conners located the Lowders and last Thursday, the two saw each other for the first time in 55 years. Slick and his wife Rosa met Daniel and his wife Betty for a reunion dinner at Cracker Barrel on Thursday evening. They certainly had a lot of catching up to do as they reminisced Army days in the 25th Infantry Division. The Lowders drove from Mint Hill, N.C. to spend two days in Richmond reviving the Army friendship.
