“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalms: 119:105)

All of us are too inexperienced to try to make it through life without a guide. God’s word is that guide. Psalm 119 unfolds the manifold features of God’s word, showing how dynamically and practically it will assist us in all of life’s circumstances. But no single verse focuses this more clearly than verse 105, which shows how God’s word lights the way, giving direction for each step (to my feet) and giving wisdom for long range plans (to my path).

Joshua likes the regular application of God’s word to life as the most certain way to both success and prosperity in living. (Joshua 1:18) Further, Psalms 119:130 notes the wisdom Gods word gives to the “simple” reminding us not to make decisions based on human delusions or outright senselessness. Also, Proverbs 6:23 reminds us that the reproofs of God are essential and for life. Let God’s word guide, correct, instructs, lead, teach and confirm. Do not hasten ahead without it, ever. Amen.

We greet you today with life, love and peace in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who is our author and finisher of our faith.

Bible study

New church

The Old Regular Baptist Church of Jesus Christ with the Indian Bottom Association is establishing a new church in Richmond. Family Day

Sunday at 3 p.m., the Concord Predestinarian Baptist Church in Moberly will observe Family Day. Special guests will be Elder Raymond Walker and the choir and congregation of Richmond Predestinarian Baptist Church. Dinner will be served. Elder Anthony W. Phelps is the host pastor.

Special worship service

Sunday at 4:30 p.m., Pleasant Green Predestinarian Baptist Church will present a special worship service. Special guests will be Pastor William Hale and the choir and congregation of St. Paul AME Church. Sis. Vel Covington is the sponsor. This program is in the interest of the Pastors Anniversary Committee. Elder John Settles is the host pastor.

Church anniversary

Sunday at 3 p.m., the Goodloe Chapel Baptist Church in Brassfield will observe its 142nd Church Anniversary. Special guests will be Pastor Thomas Rayland and the choir and congregation of the First Baptist Church of Marble Creek. Dinner will be served. The host pastor is Hunter Byrd.

Layman’s Day

Mt. Nebo Missionary Baptist Church will observe its annual Layman’s Day on Sunday at 3 p.m. Special guests will be the Hunt Brothers. The community is invited to come and worship. Host pastor is Floyd Ballew.

Church Anniversary

Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church will celebrate its 136th Church Anniversary on Sunday at 3 p.m. Special guests for that day will be Pastor Virgil Hill and his congregation from First Baptist Church, Harrodsburg. Dinner will be serviced immediately after morning worship.

Big barbecue

The Men and Women’s Fellowship of the St. Paul AME Church will sponsor a big barbecue on Saturday, Oct. 24 from noon until 4 p.m. This barbecue will feature all the trimmings. Proceeds will benefit the fifth annual Christmas Gala. It will be conduced at the church on Francis Street. For free delivery, call the church at 625-0041. The host pastor is William Hale.

Men and Women’s Day

Peytontown Baptist Church will observe Men and Women’s Day in Sunday, Oct. 25. Special guests at 3:30 p.m. will be Pastor Floyd Ballew and the choir and congregation from Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. Everyone is invited. Dinner will be served. Deacon Calvin Mitchell and Sis. Bernice Campbell are chairpersons. The host pastor is Clifford Campbell.

Fresh Fire Conference

Church on the Rock, 1049 Richmond Rd., Berea, will be having its annual Fresh Fire Conference on Oct. 23-28. It begins with the women’s conference on Oct. 23 and 24 at 7 p.m. with Pastor Beth Stephens from Athens, Ga. On Sunday, Oct. 25 at 10:45 a.m. and 6 p.m. services, Bro. Glen Wilson will be preaching. Monday, Oct. 26 will feature Adam Crabb and The Crabb Family Revival at 7 p.m. They will lead Praise and Worship and testify about what God has done for them. On Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m., Pastor Tommy Bates from Independence will be bringing the message. On Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m., evangelist Pastor Perry Stone will be preaching. Rethinking the benefits of crunches
I’ve been doing crunches all my adult life and it may be one of the reasons I have back problems. Research from the University of Waterloo in Ontario has found that repeated bending of the spine, such as occurs when doing crunches, can contribute over time to damage of spinal discs. The results are presented — along with a lot of other useful information — in the book, “Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance” by Stuart McGill.

It’s tough to be old
I was just thinking the other day about how tough it is to be old. We seniors have so many things to contend with. One of the first things is our memory, or perhaps I should say our lack of memory. I’ve often thought it is easier for us to remember things that happened to us when we were kids than to remember what we had for lunch yesterday. Names are hard to recall. It is embarrassing to meet someone who is familiar and we are certain we should know them, but simply cannot remember their name. In a conversation with a friend, to talk about a former friend but neither of you are able to recall their name.

McCreary’s second term
Between the end of Madison countian James B. McCreary’s first term in 1879 and the beginning of his second term in 1911, a lot happened in Kentucky.
Democrats continued to dominates state politics, as they did Madison County politics. But, the Republicans did break through to take control of the state government once or twice. Of course, that depends on how you interpret the whole, now-infamous Taylor-Goebel affair.
