“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good and doeth it not, to him it is sin.” James: 4:17.

We may ask ourselves, “What will it hurt? I’ll do it just this once.” Whether the sin is watching movies filled with nudity and violence, taking illegal drugs, wallowing in self-pity or spreading gossip, dabbling in sin is dangerous. James tells us to submit ourselves to God and resist the devil. When we do that, the devil will flee from us. The devil comes to us in many forms, al of them attractive. He attacks wherever he finds those who are submitted to God. Whether in the mean streets of our cities or the quiet church pew.

Here is good news. Whenever we humble ourselves in God’s eyes, submit ourselves to him and love him to the exclusion of all worldly things, we can resist the devil and he will run away from us. Just do right. Amen.

We greet you today with life, love and peace in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who is our author and finisher of our faith.

NAACP meeting

The Richmond/Madison County Branch of the NAACP meets the first Thursday of every month at 7 p.m. in First Baptist Church, 302 Francis Street, Richmond. No registration fees.

New church

The Old Regular Baptist Church of Jesus Christ with the Indian Bottom Association is establishing a new church in Richmond. They are meeting the first Sunday of every month at the Best Western Holiday Plaza, Exit 87, on the Eastern Bypass. Everyone is welcome. Tates Creek Day

On Sunday at 3 p.m., the Tates Creek Predestinarian Baptist Association will host Tates Creek Day at the Pleasant Green Baptist Church in Waco. The guest preacher will be Moderator Games McPherson. The mass choir will sing. Dinner will be served. Elder John Settles is the pastor and vice moderator.

Choir celebration

The Pleasant Green Predestinarian Baptist Church Choir is having a celebration today at 3 p.m. It will be a “Gospel Explosion” of great soloists, choirs, poetry reciting and more. Fall Festival

N.T. House of God presents Community Day & Fall Festival at Irvine-McDowell Park on Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be free food, music, inflatable, clowns, mime performance, praise dance performance and more. 153 Church Anniversary

New Liberty Baptist Church, Bobtown will observe its 153rd Church Anniversary on Sunday. Pastor Clifford Campbell, officers and members of Peytontown Baptist Church will be the special guests at 3 p.m. Everyone is invited. Alfonso Kenney is host pastor.

Rally Day

The Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Kirksville will host its Annual Rally Day on Sunday at 6 p.m. The special guests will be Pastor Kevin Cosby and the St. Stephens Baptist Church of Louisville. Everyone is invited. Pastor Howard Miller is host pastor.

Homecoming

Linden Street Baptist Church will end its revival with homecoming services on Sunday, with special singing, preaching and a potluck lunch. Bro. Paul Pearson and the congregation welcome old friends, new friends and possible friends to come celebrate.

Upward Bound Ministries

Make plans to join the host of Upward Bound Ministries Telecast lifeline on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. The special guests will be Elder John Settles and Elder Virgil Gardner. Join them as they discuss the local church. You can watch the telecast on Time Warner Access Channel 5.

Gospel singing

Calvary Apostolic Church, 1350 Paint Lick Road, Berea, is hosting the Southern Gospel music and ministry of Kenny and Donna Johnson on Oct. 11, at 1 p.m. Everyone is welcome! Their ministry touches the hearts of its audience in an old-fashioned down-home way. Prepare to be entertained and ministered to by the gifted songwriting of Kenny and the beautiful, vibrant voice of Donna. Pastor is Alan Peevler.

Tates Creek Ladies Union

The Ladies Union of Tates Creek Predestinarian Baptist Church Association will be having a meeting on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Richmond Predestinarian Baptist Church located at 209 E. Irvine St. All ladies of the association are invited. The Union president is Sis. Gilberta Tye and vice president is Sis. Regina Clark. Elder Raymond Walker is the host pastor.

Looking at various things
During my eight years away from home (Richmond and Madison County) the post office tower was a beacon welcoming me home.
Today, the the stone edifice completed in the 1892 as a post office and federal courthouse is the Madison Hall of Justice.

Things are different than when we were young
I was just thinking the other day about how confused we seniors are most of the time. Things are so different than when we were young. We find it hard to understand much of what we are confronted with.
Some things like this happen to us frequently. We begin a conversation with, “In my day.” We look so old we are followed around by archeologists. We tell our kids that old age causes us to become wiser and they tell us, “Then you must be a genius.” We no longer look forward to a wild evening out, but look forward to a dull evening in.

Rethinking the benefits of crunches
I’ve been doing crunches all my adult life and it may be one of the reasons I have back problems. Research from the University of Waterloo in Ontario has found that repeated bending of the spine, such as occurs when doing crunches, can contribute over time to damage of spinal discs. The results are presented — along with a lot of other useful information — in the book, “Ultimate Back Fitness and Performance” by Stuart McGill.
