Clothing bank to be open Saturday

KIRKSVILLE — Hello everyone. School is in full swing, so that means children waiting to be picked up by the buses. So use caution slow and respect the school bus drivers.

There are more new photos on display at the Roundhill Store. The horseless carriage from 1908 is shown. It is a 1908 Buick. The driver’s riding attire includes goggles and gloves. The second photo is of Thomas Jefferson Curtis. While having his breakfast, Shelby Cates noted that he remembered a Mr. Ballard that had a car like that. It was either a Model T or a Studebaker. Then the conversation turned to the horse and buggy. Back then, the Kirksville streets were made of dirt.

The clothing bank at the Kirksville Community Center will be open Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The clothing bank has provided a great need for the community as well as many others. Donations can be made that day as well.

The Full Gospel Tabernacle Youth group also is participating in providing some children in our community with school supplies and clothing. The young people are trying to extend a helping hand to the community.

The Kirksville Baptist Church extends an invite for anyone who would like to attend a potluck meal with the Mississippi team on Wednesday, Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. at the church. Bring a couple of dishes of food to make the night a great full of food and fellowship.

The Salem Christian Church in Poosey will be hosting a fish fry on Aug. 28 at 6 p.m. Eeryone is invited. This will be a great time to meet more of our neighbor churches.

Looking at various things
During my eight years away from home (Richmond and Madison County) the post office tower was a beacon welcoming me home.
Today, the the stone edifice completed in the 1892 as a post office and federal courthouse is the Madison Hall of Justice.

Things are different than when we were young
I was just thinking the other day about how confused we seniors are most of the time. Things are so different than when we were young. We find it hard to understand much of what we are confronted with.
Some things like this happen to us frequently. We begin a conversation with, “In my day.” We look so old we are followed around by archeologists. We tell our kids that old age causes us to become wiser and they tell us, “Then you must be a genius.” We no longer look forward to a wild evening out, but look forward to a dull evening in.

Rethinking the benefits of crunches

Research from the University of Waterloo in Ontario has found that repeated bending of the spine, such as occurs when doing crunches, can contribute over time to damage of spinal discs.
