RICHMOND — I know we have had several beautiful days recently and that puts gardening into the minds of many. But do not get overzealous! We still are probably going to have plenty of wintry days and frost before spring weather finally decides to arrive. With that said, there are a few vegetables that can be planted outside by the middle of this month: asparagus, beets, collards, kale, onion sets, peas, potatoes, radishes, rhubarb and turnips. Other plants, such as tomatoes or squash are too sensitive to be put out until we get past our frost free date, which for our area is around Mother’s Day.
Energy Expo
Did you cringe every time you had to pay your electric bill this year? Well, make your home more energy efficient! Come by the 2010 Madison County Energy Expo to pick up some tips on how to make your home more energy efficient, not to mention your life a little greener. The Energy Expo is this Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. at the Perkins Building on the EKU Campus.
There will be eight workshops on topics ranging from solar energy to composting to green landscaping. The class on recycling had to be canceled. For children, there will be classes on water quality and electricity. Workshops will start at 15 minutes past each hour and run for 45 minutes. These workshops are free. There also is a class on home weatherization that starts at 1:15 and ends at 2:45 p.m. Because participants will receive a home weatherization kit, a $15 donation is suggested. Check our Web site at http://ces.ca.uky.edu/madison/ and look under Links of Interest, for a complete listing and schedule.
Educational programs of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability or national origin.
