Waco churches, schools collecting for Haiti
Nearly $2,000 donated so far
Hi!
Is it snowing yet? This is early in the week for me (Tuesday evening as a matter of fact) and the forecast for Thursday is for a little wintry mix early, then snow for Friday into Saturday morning, followed by temperatures in the teens! I guess we should be seeing some “stuff” by the time you read this. I still have visions (and terror) of last year’s ice storm. Not only did I fear the falling tree limbs all around us, but no electricity for 11 days was horrifying. My, how we get used to conveniences, right!
Congratulations to new Waco grandparents! Great-grandmother Mary Lee and Great-grandfather Gene Webb, along with Grandmother Terri Tudor, said “hello” to their newest granddaughter, Lynnlea Nicole Tucker, on Jan. 22 around 8:30 in the morning when she made her way into this world. Lynnlea weighed eight pounds, one ounce and measured 19 inches in length. Cousins Paige Parker (daughter of Ashley) and Kirby (son of Courtney) were almost as excited as big brother Coy upon her arrival. Lynnlea is the daughter of Erica (Tudor) and Shane Tucker of Lexington.
From Flatwoods Christian “news” (thanks to Pastor Tim Jones,) we hear that $955 has been brought in for the Haiti Relief effort! Thanks to everyone for contributing, especially since there was no particular special offering or campaign, folks just giving because they wanted to, and as the Pastor said, “That is wonderful!” We also understand that Choubert Remy will be leaving for Haiti around the first of the month. Our prayers go with him as he and his wife return to a much different Haiti than when they left it back in December.
On a sad note, Roger Richardson’s sister, Laoma Thomas, passed away earlier this week. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.
The students at Waco Elementary School decided they wanted to do something for the people of Haiti. Red Cross buckets were placed in each homeroom to hold money (change, money from home, etc.) Their goal was to collect enough to contribute $1,000. By Monday, their total collection was a little over $800. Wow, isn’t that great? Way to contribute, Waco!
That’s about it for this week. Have a great weekend, snow and all!

Timely beef cattle tips for July
Spring-calving cow herd
• Remove bulls from the cow herd by the end of the month and keep them away from the cows. A short calving season can concentrate labor during the calving season; group calves by age so that it is easier to find a convenient time to vaccinate, castrate, dehorn, etc.; and provide a more uniform group of calves at market time. -
Death of maples in the landscape
There have been reports pretty much statewide of landscape maple trees suddenly dying, according to the University of Kentucky.

In love with love apples
It is just about time for harvesting tomatoes, those delightful fruits of summer that we lust for through the cold months of the year.

Fair goers treated to works of art
In a world of mass production and instant gratification, it is comforting to know that there are still crafters, artisans and gardeners in Madison County that take time to create their own works of art.

Financial reform hurts poor people
“At the dark end of the street,
That’s where we’ll always meet.”

One the insights that I got from Gary Rivlin’s “Broke USA” is that people often use payday lenders because they don’t have access to traditional banks. -
The Terrace honored for safety
Employees of The Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility in Berea have worked more than one million hours without a lost-time employee injury.
For the second consecutive year, the Kentucky Labor Cabinet recognized the facility for the safety milestone in May during the Governor’s Safety and Health Conference at the Galt House in Louisville. About 600 safety-oriented professionals from across the state attend the conference each year to participate in OSHA-related training courses. -
Praise will deliver us from the power of the enemy

Aging is tough, and sometimes funny
I was just thinking the other day about how difficult it is to be old. We stay confused much of the time. Things continue to change, often faster than we can comprehend.

How to choose a Medigap policy
Some seniors are surprised when they learn that their red, white and blue Medicare card does not cover all of their doctor and hospital bills. One way to help with the extra costs is to purchase a Medigap policy.
