Public libraries offer several programs during winter months

RICHMOND — Several adult and children’s activities are planned this holiday season at Madison County libraries.

For adults, the Lexington Vintage Dance will be presenting a Charles Dickens Ball at 1 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Berea location.

The Madison County Extension Office is presenting “Heartfelt Holidays,” a program that offers ways to make homemade gifts, including interactive displays and several gift ideas. This event will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Dec. 11 at the Richmond location and at the same time Dec. 13 at the Berea location.

Children and teenagers can take advantage of the Madison County Public Library’s Winter Reading Program. This is similar to the “very popular” annual Summer Reading Program, according to library Director Ruthie Maslin.

The program is for children and teens who are 18 or younger. It runs Dec. 20 through Jan. 2.

“Each finisher will get a free book and will be entered into a drawing to win an Android tablet PC or $100 gift certificate to Hastings,” Maslin said. “We are hoping that running the program while kids are out of school for the holidays will keep them focused on reading while they are on break.”

The Winter Reading cards can be picked up and turned back in at the Richmond or Berea locations or the bookmobile.

Berea activities:

• Dec. 4, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. — holiday craft, cut paper snowflakes and fold Moravian Stars

• Dec. 20, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. — movie fun with “Arthur Christmas” (97 minutes, PG)

• Dec. 21, 10:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. — Holiday Party – includes photos with Santa and ornament making

Richmond activities:

• Dec. 11, 6:30 p.m. — Duct Tape Christmas Party for Teens and Tweens. Make original gifts for friends and family.

• Dec. 15, 1 p.m. — Christmas party, The Charles Dickens Show, 2 p.m. — Ornament Making

• Dec. 20, 1 - 3 p.m. —Snowflake Crafts

• Dec. 27, 1 - 3 p.m. — Snowman Thermometer Crafts

Fun for all:

• Dec. 1 — Watch for the library float in the Berea Twilight Christmas Parade

• Dec. 7 — Watch for the library float in the Richmond Christmas Parade

• Dec. 8 — Friends of the Madison County Public Library will host a book drive to bring in donations for the annual book sale in the spring. Money raised from the book sale supports a number of library programs such as the Annual Summer Reading Program.

• 9 a.m. - noon — Berea Baptist Church parking lot, 310 Chestnut Street

• 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. —Richmond Lowe’s parking lot, 814 Eastern Bypass

Holiday Closings:

Both locations will be closed on the following days:

Nov. 22 – Thanksgiving

Dec. 24 – Christmas Eve

Dec. 25 – Christmas Day

Dec.31 – New Year’s Eve

Jan. 1 – New Year’s Day

The bookmobile will not be in service the weeks of Christmas and New Year’s.

How is everyone’s week going? I hope everyone is having a great one. Well the weather has improved a lot. I have heard the lawn mowers buzzing since the rain stopped for a few of days. Everyone is trying to get their yard mowed and trimmed up before the next rain. Gardeners are out working diligently working the grounds that have finally dried enough to plant things. It has been very difficult on the gardeners with all of the rain to get their gardens planted. Oh, won’t those fresh vegetables taste good.

Union City Day is this Saturday
Union City Day is this Saturday. There will be music, food and yard sales including some "Made in Union City" items. I have heard that one of the music sessions will include folks from Union City Baptist Church with ukuleles. For yard sales, you can start setting up at 7 a.m. Saturday morning. It will be a great day to get out and meet your neighbors. Two raffles are underway, one is for a quilt handmade by Mary Sewell. Raffle tickets are available for several prizes including, a 32 inch TV, a Garmin GPS unit and Paula Deen Cookware. See a Ruritan member to purchase tickets. Drawings will be after 2 p.m. All proceeds from both raffles will go to the floor replacement fund.

The sun is going to shine for us
It's another cloudy Tuesday here in Paint Lick, but folks, the sun is going to shine for us all this week, so we can get into our gardens and plow up our fields and just be happy that maybe the rain will stay away, at least for a little while. We have a wonderful breeze out that will soon dry the ground.
