RICHMOND —
Eastern Kentucky University’s Division of Natural Areas will host “Family Nature Day” at the Maywoods Environmental and Educational Laboratory on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The outdoor activities for children and adults, led by EKU faculty, staff and students, will be available at no charge at the University’s natural area.
Planned events include:
• A “Creek Crawl” to explore the stream ecosystem and learn about its diverse inhabitants
• A 1.4-mile hike to discover more about the oak-hickory forest ecosystem
• A bird tracking adventure, GPS scavenger hunt
• A “fishing basics” workshop (equipment provided)
• A woodland creature hunt, among other activities.
Lunch concessions will be provided by the EKU Wildlife Society.
Several all-day activities will be offered (pre-registration for these events not required):
• Slithering Friends: Learn how to distinguish venomous snakes from the non-venomous variety.
• Outdoor Adventure (mountain biking and slack line fun)
• Nature Games and Crafts. Enjoy a variety of games and crafts (suitable for all ages) to learn more about the natural environment.
Morning and afternoon sessions require pre-registration. Participants may attend any of the planned outings; however, space is limited for many, so early registration is urged.
Morning, 10 a.m.-Noon
• Forest Ecology Hike, discover the fascinating oak-hickory forest ecosystem on a 1.4-mile hike.
• Creek Crawl, explore the stream ecosystem and learn about its diverse inhabitants (wear old shoes or boots).
• Bird Tracking Adventure, learn and practice how biologists capture, band, and track birds using mist-nets and radio telemetry.
• Fishing Basics, learn the art of fishing and enjoy a relaxing and exciting day with a fishing expert.
Afternoon, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
• Woodland Creature Hunt, hunt for the hidden and camouflaged creatures living in the Maywoods forest.
• Nature Tech, explore many of the tools and weapons that Native Americans made from forest resources with stone tool/arrow making and primitive archery/spear throwing demonstrations.
• Daytime Astronomy, see what the skies have to offer when the sun is shining bright.
• GPS Scavenger Hunt, learn the basics of navigating and researching with a GPS unit during a scavenger hunt.
Located approximately 22 miles southwest of Richmond and the EKU campus; Maywoods straddles the hilly terrain of Garrard and Rockcastle counties and is covered by second-growth oak and pine forests. State champs get their rings at YMCA breakfast

Toyota bornlearning Academy graduates parents
Seven graduates received their certificates Thursday night, but not with the customary rendition of “Pomp and Circumstance.”
It was a celebration of the parents’ six-month journey with the Toyota bornlearning Academy at Berea Community School.
The academy works with parents and caregivers of children from prenatal to 5 years old on ways to turn everyday moments into learning opportunities. -

The Incredible Child: Support group for parents of special-needs children meets Tuesday at library
Richmond now has a local chapter of The Incredible Child, a support group for families of children with all types of disabilities.
The group will host the family-friendly event “Read to Me” from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Madison County Public Library in Richmond. -

First Lady urges graduates to live by their values
Touching on her own college experiences, First Lady Michelle Obama urged Eastern Kentucky University graduates to live a life of service while building on valuable character traits that will benefit the entire nation.
Obama visited Richmond as the featured speaker for EKU’s evening commencement. She chose to speak at the ceremony because of the university’s recognized commitment to serving student military veterans. -
Board votes to reclassify full-time substitute teachers
Madison County Schools teachers and staff cheered Thursday night after a proposal to cut two contracted days from the school calendar died when board members declined to make a motion on the measure, either pro or con.
However, 15 educators in the district will see cuts to their salaries as the board voted 5-0 to reclassify full-time substitute teachers to para-educators. -
Little Shop of Horrors
The final performance of Berea Community High School’s production of “Little Shop of Horrors" is 7 p.m. Saturday (May 11) in the school's Kennedy Theater. Tickets are $5.
