Berea officials recognize suspected thief, stop him from entering school

Lexington police believe man has stolen iPhones from restaurants, school

BEREA — A man who entered a Fayette County school during basketball practice and stole items from locker rooms may have attempted to do the same thing Thursday afternoon at Berea Community School.

The man entered the Berea school at 3:30 p.m. and asked for directions to the gym, according to a news release from Sgt. Jake Reed with the Berea Police Department. Berea school employees recognized the man based on an email and surveillance video pictures sent out about the earlier theft, and they confronted him.

The well-dressed man left in a black 2006 Ford F-150 with a Kentucky tag, 943-EMX, the news release stated. The truck had a blue UK sticker in the rear window.

Berea officers responded to the incident but were unable to find the vehicle, Reed said.

According to a WKYT news report Wednesday, a man walked into the Blue Grass Baptist School gymnasium in Lexington on Monday while the girls’ basketball team was practicing. He told the principal he was fixing a light, WKYT reported.

A student’s iPhone was reported stolen afterwards.

Prior to that, Lexington police believe the same man posing as a Kentucky Eagle Beer employee entered three Lexington restaurants and stole employees’ iPhones. He also attempted to enter a fourth restaurant but ran after employees questioned him, according to the report.

Reed said Lexington police have been informed about the Berea school incident.

“It very well may be the same man,” Reed said.

Reed said other area schools have been notified about the incident. If anyone sees the man or the vehicle he was driving, they are asked to contact the BPD at 986-8456.
