Deputies apprehend man wanted in Monday shooting

RICHMOND — Madison County Sheriff’s deputies have apprehended the suspect in Monday afternoon’s shooting on Race and Spring streets.

Tony Ray Gay, 21, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with first-degree assault, four counts of first-degree wanton endangerment and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.

Deputies were responding to a call on Canterbury Road about a man with a gun in the area, according to a Richmond Police Department news release.

“While investigating the report, officers encountered Gay and took him into custody without incident,” Brock said in the release.

Gay was not the subject of the complaint and was not armed when he was arrested, the police chief said.

Gay is suspected of shooting a male victim in the abdomen around 4 p.m. Monday. Surveillance video from a nearby business captured images of the incident, which happened outside, and the suspect fleeing the scene in a 2001 Ford Taurus.

The victim was taken to the University of Kentucky Medical Center and is expected to recover, Brock said. The RPD did not release the victim’s name or give information about a possible motive in the crime.
