Library ‘baffled’ by theft of 42-inch TV

RICHMOND — A 42-inch LCD television was reported stolen from the Madison County Library and, library personnel are “baffled” as to how it went missing, said Ruthie Maslin, library director.

“We all feel very offended. Why would somebody do that to us?” asked Maslin, who said the television was intended for the children’s area in the library.

It was only a matter of a few days between when the television was purchased and when it was scheduled to be installed, she said.

There were no signs of a break-in, said RPD Chief Larry Brock. The television had been located in a hallway near one of the offices and was apparently taken while the library was open, he said.

Library personnel are reviewing all security video footage and have been talking to a locksmith about ways they can “beef up” security, Maslin said.

However, the library had just recently performed some security upgrades, like installing additional cameras in more areas of the facility, she said.

No library staff are suspected in connection with the theft, Maslin said, but it is believed that someone was able to gain access to an area “they weren’t suppose to have access to.”

Police are attempting to track the television’s model number #42CS560 while the library combs through the security footage.

“We’re going through every movement in our heads. So far, we don’t have any leads,” Maslin said. The estimated loss is $600.

A complainant reported Tuesday that a Tapco metal brake had been stolen from his truck while it was parked in front of Baptist Health in Richmond (formerly Pattie A. Clay Hospital) during the morning, according to an RPD report.

The brake is described as 8-feet long by 18-inches wide and 10-inches tall. The estimated loss is $650.

Also on Tuesday, a resident of the 500 block of Leverton Place reported her home had been broken into during the afternoon and several items were stolen. The thief gained entry into her home by forcing open a rear door, according to the police report.

The following items were reported missing: $200 in cash; a gold tennis bracelet with faux diamonds; a ladies’ gold emerald cut sapphire ring with channeled diamonds; a ladies’ gold ring with a shell shape on one side; a ladies’ large faux diamond ring; and two Visa gift cards ($135 and $40). The estimated loss is $1,875.
