Three people were charged with various drug offenses following traffic stops in Berea.
On Monday, an officer stopped a vehicle on Jefferson Street after he saw it in the area of America’s Best Value Inn and knew the driver had an active arrest warrant, a BPD news release stated.
The driver, James Sturgill, 46, of Berea, was arrested, and the female passenger, Sandra Sturgill, 26, of Ravenna, gave police consent to search the hotel room they had just left, according to the release.
Berea police reported finding a small amount of crystal meth, six and a half hydrocodone pills and several straws with drug residue inside the hotel room.
Both Sturgills were charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance, second-degree possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
On Oct. 4, a BPD officer stopped a vehicle on Silver Creek Drive, and after speaking with the driver, the officer said he obtained consent to search the vehicle.
A cut straw and several oxycodone pills were found inside the vehicle, according to the release.
One of the vehicle’s occupants, Hillary Combs, 20, of Berea told the officer she had bought the drugs to sell them, the release stated.
Combs was charged with trafficking in a controlled substance (over 10 dosage units) and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The other vehicle’s occupant, Jessica Cavezza, 29, of Carlisle, was charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Police: Vehicle set on fire
Berea police believe a Berenwood Drive resident’s vehicle was intentionally set on fire Sunday.
Officers were called to the 100 block of Berenwood Drive where the victim told police he was inside his home when he noticed his vehicle was on fire around the driver’s side gas tank, the news release stated.
The man was able to put out the flames with a water hose before the Berea Fire Department arrived.
“The gas cap had been removed and was lying on the ground and a burnt rag was sticking out of the gas tank,” according to the release.
The driver’s side of the vehicle was damaged from the fire, according to police.
Mistaken identity reportedly leads to assault
Berea police officers were called Oct. 4 to St. Joseph Berea after a woman reported being the victim of a physical assault.
The woman told police she was attacked by an unknown woman while on foot on North Broadway, a BPD news release stated. The woman said after the assault, the attacker apologized and said she “mistook her for someone else,” the release said.
The woman reportedly suffered minor injuries.
Misdemeanor arrests
From Oct. 3 to Oct. 8, Berea police charged one person with driving under the influence of an intoxicant, another person was charged with shoplifting items worth $109 and also third-degree criminal trespassing because she had been banned from Walmart stores for a previous theft, and one person was charged with alcohol intoxication.
Several burglaries,one theft reported this month
A resident in the 1000 block of KY 1016 reported Saturday that hunting equipment items, worth $1,000, were stolen from his vehicle.
A person in the 100 block of Blythe Court told police Oct. 3 that several tools, worth $735, were taken from his property.
A resident in the 1000 block of Brooklyn Boulevard reported Oct. 1 that his rear glass door was damaged and items worth $400 were taken.
A person reported Oct. 1 that locks were cut from a storage building in the 200 block of North Dogwood Drive and $800-worth of items were stolen from inside the building.

Three Richmond thefts reported Tuesday-Thursday
Richmond police are investigating thefts reported from Tuesday through Thursday.
An employee of Baptist Health, Eastern Bypass, reported Thursday that her vehicle had been broken into during the evening and a small shoulder purse was stolen. The purse contained several debit/credit cards, $70 in cash, and a Pantech slider cellular telephone. Estimated loss: $595. -
Court hearing reveals errors in trafficking case’s investigative file
A discrepancy in police records led to an unusual hearing in a drug trafficking case Thursday in Madison Circuit Court.
The attorney for 49-year-old Carla Rae Clontz made a motion earlier this month for a bill of particulars hearing. Both the prosecution and defense attorneys had noticed problems with the file numbers in Clontz’ case, and there also were different reports of the number of pills sheriff’s deputies allege were found in her home. -
Man charged in theft of cash, skates from Sonic
Richmond police charged Isaac Hamilton, 20, of South Killarney Lane, with two counts of theft by unlawful taking under $500 Tuesday after he allegedly stole from his employer.
Hamilton, a former employee of Sonic on Big Hill Avenue, left the drive-in restaurant May 15 with $273.84, a change dispenser and a pair of roller skates and did not return, the business reported to police. -
Grand jury indicts man on DUI, endangerment charges in injury accident
A February car crash in which one person suffered a broken arm led to the indictment this week of an Irvine man on four wanton endangerment charges.
Zachary C. Goosey, 20, was was traveling eastbound Feb. 18 on the Eastern Bypass when his vehicle crossed the median and struck a westbound vehicle stopped at a traffic light, according to a Richmond police news release. -
Items stolen, but no one injured in home invasion
Berea police are looking for a man who broke into a First Street home Monday and threatened a resident with a knife.
