Police look for suspect in weekend hit-and-run

RICHMOND — Richmond police are searching for a driver who reportedly struck a man early Sunday on the Eastern Bypass, then fled the scene.

Officers were dispatched at 2:32 a.m. to the area of the Eastern Bypass and Commercial Drive to investigate a report of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.

“Officers discovered a male who was suffering from a leg injury and a laceration to the back of his head,” said Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock.

“The male indicated to officers that he was crossing the Eastern Bypass on foot when a vehicle swerved out of its traffic lane and struck him.”

The vehicle stopped and the driver checked on the pedestrian, but then returned to his vehicle and fled the scene without identifying himself, he said.

The pedestrian was taken to Baptist Health in Richmond where medical personnel determined his right leg was broken, Brock said.

The suspect vehicle was described as a white, 1990s model GMC or Chevrolet full-size pickup truck.

“A side mirror of the truck was recovered at the scene and the truck struck an orange traffic barrel,” Brock said.

The operator was described as a white male in his 30s or 40s. A blonde female was a passenger in the vehicle. The truck was last seen traveling east toward Irvine Road, according to police.

“The pedestrian and a witness reported that the driver of the vehicle had been drinking,” Brock said.

Other crimes:

• A resident in the 200 block of Magnolia Drive reported Sept. 28 that his residence had been broken into during the morning hours and a number of items were stolen. Entry was gained by forcing open a rear door, according to police.

“The victim reported that $300 in cash and several items of jewelry were stolen from the residence,” Brock said. The estimated loss has not been determined pending inventory of missing jewelry.

• A resident in the 500 block of Westover Avenue reported Sept. 27 that two of his vehicles had been unlawfully entered overnight and a handgun had been stolen from each vehicle.

The passenger-side door window of one vehicle was broken to gain entry, and a Springfield Armory 9mm pistol, model XD-9 Compact with a stainless steel slide, was stolen, police said.

There were no signs of forced entry into the second vehicle, and a black Springfield Armory 9mm pistol, model XDM, was stolen, Brock said. The estimated loss is $900.

• A contractor installing an air conditioning unit in the 1600 block of Foxhaven Drive reported Sept. 27 that a bag of tools had been stolen from his truck during the late afternoon.

The bag contained tools ranging from a cordless impact drill to a nut-driver set. The estimated loss is $525.

• The owner of an apartment building in the 700 block of Sizemore Drive reported Sept. 25 that a York 1.5 ton exterior air conditioning unit had been stolen over the weekend from the rear of the building. The estimated loss is $2,500.
