RICHMOND —
A suspected shoplifter was charged Friday with felony criminal mischief after he damaged a security sensor during a struggle with store employees, according to Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock.
Joshua P. Richards, 35, Mount Rushmore Drive, was charged with first-degree criminal mischief, theft by unlawful taking (under $500) and possession of marijuana.
An officer was sent to Belk at 5:33 p.m. to investigate a shoplifting complaint, Brock said in a news release. Employees told the officer that Richards had been seen concealing a Zeki tablet computer on himself after taking it out of its box and security wrappings, the release stated.
Richards attempted to leave the store without paying, Brock said. When confronted by store employees, Richards struggled with the workers and a security sensor was damaged at the front of the store, according to the release.
The damage to the sensor was estimated to be $3,500.
After his arrest, the officer searching Richards reported finding a bag marijuana in Richards’ vehicle, the police chief said.
Disturbance complaint leads to discovery of stolen belongings
A Richmond man was charged Thursday after police found several items reported stolen among his belongings that were piled outside a Bradbury Point home.
Police were called at 9:51 a.m. to the 100 block of Bradbury Point in response to a disturbance complaint, an RPD new release stated.
When they arrived, the officers found James Snowden, 30, in the middle of the road and learned that he’d been involved in a dispute with a relative, according to the release.
A large pile of property was on the ground that was determined to be in Snowden’s possession, and police discovered the majority of the items had been reported to the sheriff’s department as having been stolen from vehicles during the night. The items included several tools, a backpack, clothing, a pool cue and several cell phones. A Samsung Galaxy cell phone that had been reported to the RPD as stolen from a burglarized Chenault Drive home also was found, according to the release.
The officers reported finding several more stolen items in a nearby fence line. The total estimated value of the recovered items was $2,630, the release stated.
Snowden was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property (under $10,000), public intoxication and tampering with physical evidence.
Tools taken from detached garage
A resident in the 100 block of Vescio Drive reported Saturday that several items worth a total of $1,095 had been stolen from her detached garage during the night. The missing items included a Porter Cable router, a Dewalt router, three Porter Cable electric sanders, a Makita belt sander and a black case containing a set of Harbor Freight air sockets.
Other burglaries:
• A resident in the 100 block of Dennis Street reported Thursday that an orange Husqvarna riding mower worth $1,600 had been stolen from her storage building behind the her home about a month ago. A latch had been broken on the door, the RPD release stated.
Phone, medicine goes missing from man’s pocket at bar
A complainant reported Sunday that a black Samsung flip phone and a bottle of prescription medication had been stolen from his pocket while he was playing pool from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Blue Moon Bar. The estimated loss was $175.
Other thefts:
• A complainant reported Saturday that a Poulan 16-inch chainsaw, worth $150, had been stolen Oct. 10 from the toolbox in the bed of his truck.
• A resident in the 300 block of Overland Drive reported Thursday that a black-and-white polka dotted Thirty-One tote bag with a red L monogram and $6 in loose change had been stolen from her vehicle during the previous day. Estimated loss was $45.
• A resident in the 600 block of Benjamin Drive reported Nov. 6 that several items, worth a total of $420, had been stolen from his home some time during the previous five days while visitors had been in the home. The missing items were a Hi-Point .380 caliber pistol, a sterling silver diamond heart necklace and a V-shaped two-tone silver and gold necklace with diamonds in the middle.
• A complaint told police Nov. 7 that her brown Nine & Co. tote with a green wallet had been stolen from her shopping car at Kroger that evening. The tote had numerous credit cards and personal identification documents. The estimated loss was $125.
• A resident in the 300 block of Overland Drive reported that $20, a black duffel bag with a Mickey Mouse image oand a Nikon P500 digital camera had been stolen from his unlocked vehicle during the night. The estimated loss was $527.

Hamilton, a former employee of Sonic on Big Hill Avenue, left the drive-in restaurant May 15 with $273.84, a change dispenser and a pair of roller skates and did not return, the business reported to police. -
Grand jury indicts man on DUI, endangerment charges in injury accident
A February car crash in which one person suffered a broken arm led to the indictment this week of an Irvine man on four wanton endangerment charges.
Zachary C. Goosey, 20, was was traveling eastbound Feb. 18 on the Eastern Bypass when his vehicle crossed the median and struck a westbound vehicle stopped at a traffic light, according to a Richmond police news release. -
