RICHMOND —
A Manchester couple were arrested Friday after police say they left their infant in the car at Kohl’s on a day in which the temperature barely got above freezing.
Haitham Alsahli, 34, and his wife, Kalih Ghadeer, 25, were charged with first-degree wanton endangerment and endangering the welfare of a minor.
Richmond police were called to the parking lot at 12:16 p.m. to investigate a report of a baby being left in a locked car, an RPD news release stated.
The temperature at the time was below freezing at 29 degrees, according to the release.
Officers arrived at the scene at 12:22 p.m. and determined the vehicle had been parked there since 11:48 a.m., according to the release. The child could be seen sleeping in her car seat in the rear seat of the locked vehicle.
Richmond Fire Rescue had to be summoned to gain entry into the vehicle and remove the 3 ½-month-old infant. Madison County EMS examined the child and found she was in good health, the RPD reported.
A few minutes later, Alsahli and Ghadeer were found inside the store and detained, according to the RPD.
Workers with the state Cabinet for Health and Family Services took custody of the baby along with another small child that had been inside the store with the couple.
