RICHMOND —
Officials investigating the Saturday evening death of a Madison County Detention Center inmate suspect he committed suicide although an official cause of death will not be released until after an autopsy.
Charles Franklin Hoffman, 28, of Hastings, Mich., was pronounced dead at the jail at 8:30 p.m., according to Madison County Coroner Jimmy Cornelison.
Hoffman was being held at the jail under a “fugitive from another state” holder, according to Jailer Doug Thomas. Thomas said Hoffman had been wanted on a parole violation warrant out of Michigan.
Hoffman was arrested Oct. 14 by a Berea Police Department officer, according to the MCDC website.
KSP Post 7 spokesperson Trooper Paul Blanton said the KSP detective investigating the death indicated that Hoffman likely took his own life.
Cornelison said he had “strong suspicions” about the manner of Hoffman’s death but had sent the man’s body to the state medical examiner in Frankfort for an autopsy, which will be performed Monday morning. The coroner said it was likely the cause of death report would be available Monday afternoon.
Hoffman’s next-of-kin have been notified, Cornelison said.
Thomas said this is the first time an inmate has died in the detention center since he took office in January 2011. To the best of his knowledge, Thomas said Hoffman was not under any sort of suicide-watch by jail personnel.
“It’s unfortunate, but sometimes it happens,” Thomas said.
