RICHMOND —
The election wasn’t the only news in Richmond on Tuesday.
Sgt. Nathan Day was taking part in what state police officials say was traffic enforcement detail at about 3 p.m. when he stopped a 2005 Toyota Tacoma pickup that he said failed to signal when it swerved and almost collided with a semi-trailer truck on the northbound exit ramp of Interstate 75 at Exit 87.
Day also believed the pickup’s windows were excessively tinted, said Officer Jess Staggs, a spokesperson for the Kentucky State Police’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division for which Day also is an officer.
After the stop, the vehicle’s driver, who was not identified, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Staggs said.
Seven state police and vehicle-enforcement cruisers responded to the scene.
One of the stopped vehicle’s two passengers, who was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, was also found to be in possession of a bag containing $24,110 in cash, Staggs said.
The cash, banded in small bundles, was spread out on the pickup’s hood when a Richmond Register photographer drove by the scene.
The man denied ownership of the cash and willingly forfeited it to police, the KSP spokesperson said. He was cited on the paraphernalia charge and released, and Staggs did not name him.
No charges were filed against the third man, and he was released.
The occupants told officers and troopers at the scene that they were traveling from Harlan County to Lexington, where the man in possession of the cash bag planned to take a bus to Detroit, Staggs said.
The Madison County Detention Center’s website shows that a Stephen Cody Simpson, 26, of Cumberland in Harlan County was booked by the KSP at 4:29 p.m. on charges of driving under the influence, careless driving and excessive window tinting.
The vehicle was towed, and the incident remains under investigation, Staggs said.
